Plot summary
Plot — The Triumph of Peace
Fancy, Jollity, and Laughter come to court to help with the masque, only to discover that they are expected to supply the antimasque themselves. They provide one in their own persons, after which most of the party go off to the tavern. Fancy and Opinion stay behind, and Fancy offers another eleven antimasques representing the effects of peace: sexual corruption, sturdy beggars, projectors with mad schemes, cheating prostitutes, highway robbery, attempted rape, folly, and sport; for the sake of variety, Fancy also provides an antimasque of dancing birds, and the antimasques become progressively more fantastical as they go on. His friends return, drunk, and they are all scared off by the arrival of Peace in a cloud. Peace is joined by Law and Justice: Peace and Law sing of their mutual interdependence, while Justice is initially confused by her surroundings. They present their offspring, the masquers, to the King and Queen in the audience. Dancing ensues. The stage is invaded by a group of common people who have helped in the production of the masque but have been refused entry to the performance: they are determined to see some dancing, but the masquers will not oblige; so they end up dancing themselves as a further antimasque. The masquers revel with ladies from the audience. Amphiluche arrives, envious that such entertainment is taking place at night; but her coming heralds the dawn, and brings the masque to an end.
