Plot summary
Plot — Match Me in London
It is midnight, and Tormiella is missing from her father Malevento’s house. He wonders if she is visiting Gazetto, her fiancé, but in fact she has eloped to Seville with the man she loves, Cordolente. There they get married and open a shop. The bawd Dildoman recommends her to the King, who comes to the shop on the pretext of buying a glove. Tormiella is taken to court and her escort disposed of by a ruse; Dildoman tries to persuade her to yield to the King. The Queen becomes jealous of Tormiella and attempts to stab her. Cordolente realizes he has been cuckolded; he and Malevento are both offered places at court, but only Malevento accepts. Don John intends to depose the King, his brother, with the help of the Portuguese nobility. He persuades his doctor to poison Don Valasco, the Queen’s father, having first told him that the King is having an affair with Tormiella. Valasco eats some grapes, falls sick, and is then poisoned with the medicine the doctor administers; Don John sends the body home. In fact, it was only a sleeping potion, and the King confronts Don John with the living Valasco; when their quarrel escalates to the point of a duel, the King puts Don John under house arrest. He discovers documentary proof of the conspiracy, and sends Valasco to supervise Don John’s execution, which is to be done in private and using a method selected by Don John himself from an illustrated book of deaths. Valasco reports him dead. The King uses Martines, who is implicated in Don John’s plot, to facilitate a charge of adultery against the Queen: he writes her a love-letter to the King’s dictation and delivers it, only to be arrested. The King engages Gazetto, who has come to Seville in disguise, to murder both the Queen and Cordolente, thereby clearing his path to marry Tormiella. Gazetto has scruples about killing the Queen, but is quite ready to dispose of his successful rival in love. The King hears that Tormiella has gone mad; then Gazetto reports that the Queen is dead. The King intends to go through with marrying Tormiella anyway, and Gazetto offers to cure her. When he visits her disguised as a doctor, he learns that the madness is only a ruse to facilitate her escape from court with Cordolente. Gazetto reveals his identity to her, and she agrees to kill the King on their wedding night. Warned by Gazetto, Cordolente tries to kill Tormiella before the marriage can take place, but is prevented; however, thunder stops the wedding, and the King comes to his…
