We know your worthiness is experienced in all true wisdom. We are glad to hear your grace so esolute. God save your excellence: what sad, dull, heavy? Or are you now in meditation Which partly to take to morrow at the Tilt? The mead is ringed with tents of stranger Knights, Whose rich devices, and caparisons Exceed the Persian Monarch's, when he met Destruction and pale death sent from the sword Of Philips son, and his stout Macedons Cheerly Prince Otho ther's such a warlike sighed That would stir up a leaden heart to fight. For honour and fair Luicbell. I cannot tell I left him with his loved Lucibell. How? p ay you how? what hath the princess done? Fled with a Grecian? saw you them go Prince Otho? And would not stay them? 'sdeath; what path? which way? that I may track her harlot-steps, Fled now: gone now: isle go seek Lodowick Where is that chapel? where's that hermitage? If you love honour Princely Luningberg, Lets to that chapel: if you know the way, That I may kill our shame, ere it S e day. I will do what I can; o hell of life! Who, but a fool would strive to win a wife? shall we call Lodowick? Nothing, no for nothing. She is as harlots, fair, Like guilded tombs Goodly without; within all rottenness: she's Like a painted fire upon a hill, set to allure the frost-nipped passengers, And starve them after hope: she is indeed As all such strumpets are, Angel in show, Devil in heart: Come, come if you love me go. Art sure tha'st found them? Adulterer: stiumpet. Both have abum ed our glory, both shall bleed, Brother. I, accursed I, Hold me not Prince Otho. I will revenge my self upon my self For Parricide for damned parricide: I have killed my brother sleeping in the arms Of the divinest form that ever held breath. I have killed loves Queen defaced with my foul hand, The goodliest frame that ever nature built And driven the graces from the mansion Wherein they have continued from their birth; She now being dead, shee'l dwell no more on earth. Jealous rage, suspicion by Prince Otho, That Lucibell had fled with a base Greek, O me accursed! I am born to shame. Forgive me brother, pardon fairest maid, And ere the icy hand of ashy death Foe worser your fair bodies in this sable veil; Discover why you put on this disguise. I'll tell thee hypocrite. Father, it's he: Lorrique his man attends him, That fellow which is all composed of mirth Of mirth? of death: why should I think of mirth After so foul a murder? come lend hands To give this Princely body funeral rites, That I may sacrifice this hand and heart For my peace-offerings on their sepulchers. O me accursed I why live I this black day Here is a hand over my fate hath power And I now sink under the stroke of death, But that a purer spirit fills my breast And guides me from the footsteps of despair, Well, I will be her guardian and her guide, By me her senses have been weakened, But i'll contend with charitable pain, To serve her, till they be restored again. Have you not found her yet? Then I beleeeue born by her fits of rage She ha done violence to her bright same, And fallen upon the bosom of the Balt. I did perceive her some half hour since Clambering upon the steepenes of the rock, But whither up or down I could not guess By reason of the distance. Lets circle her about, least spying us she run away with wonted nimbleness, Fairest well met. Stand close, this is Lorrique, I do not know the Lady comes with him. On on, that deed is writ among the acts of gilded: A brother's sword a brother's life blood spilled. Stay judge him not, let me a little plead in his excuse, And this one sentence serves; a manaompel'd To evil acts, cannot be justly held A wilful malefactor; the law still Looks upon the deed, never on the will: Beside although I grant the matter small And very safe to raise a multitude, That by their power might cease the m rderer, Yet two especial reasons cross that course: First: many having notice of our plot, One babbling tongue may utter out intent, And Hoffman being warned is surely armed Having the fort and treasure in his pour, And be his cause more then notorious ill, He may with gold maintain it at his will Escape us, for no doubt he's full of sleights: Beside, Revenge should have proportion, By sly deceit he acted every wrong, And by deceit I would have him entrapped; Then the re enge were fit, joust, and square, And would more vex him that is all composed Of craft and subtlety to be outstripped In his own fashion, then a hundred death's. Therefore by my advice pardon Lorrique Upon condition, that he lay some plot To intercept the other. We credit thee, join hands, and ring him round, Kneel, on his head lay our right hands, and swear Vengeance against Hoffman. No doubt our uncle's care will keep her safe, Nor is she in her fits so violent As she was wont, look where my Uncle comes, sustaining with one hand A dying man, and one the other side, Fair Lucibell supports the fainting body. 'Tis now too late, we are beset With soldiers, we must fight, and since it must be; Let's to't valiantly. Me brotherless. o smooth tongued hypocrite How thou didst draw me to my brother's death. What's on there heads? Cease words, use deeds Revenge draws nigh.

Férditiaid) Duke of Prussia, disinherits his son Jeremie and adopts the supposed Charles as his heir. The brothers BOdGWick and Mathias are to joust for the hand of L@€ibélla. Their fathers, SAXGHY and \(AuStfid, meet by chance at the hermit R@@EfiIEK’s cell and discover that he is Austria’s long-lost brother. Hoffman, posing as Roderick, tells Lodowick and Lucibella that Ferdinand has plotted Lodowick’s murder, and supplies Lodowick with Greek garments to enable them to leave the court in disguise. He then tells Mathias that Lucibella has absconded with a Greek. Mathias pursues the couple and assaults them; Lodowick has time to reveal the truth before he dies. Roderick denies the story, and Saxony confirms his alibi. Hoffman murders Austria. Lucibella recovers from her wounds, but goes mad with grief. J@fGME raises an army in rebellion against his father, but Hoffman makes peace by persuading him to accept the office of food taster. He inveigles his servant Lorrique into Jerome’s service disguised as a French doctor. Jerome acquires poison from him to murder ‘Charles’, but only succeeds in administering it to Ferdinand and himself (as food taster); unfortunately the antidote supplied by the ‘doctor’ doesn’t work. Hoffman succeeds to the Dukedom. Charles’s recently widowed mother, Martha, comes to court to congratulate her son, and Hoffman considers killing her to protect his identity, but instead enlists her as an ally after explaining what happened (but omitting to mention that he murdered Charles). Mathias, Saxony, and Roderick find the skeletons of Hans Hoffman and Charles, and overhear Lorrique discussing Hoffman’s imposture with Martha. Lucibella gives Martha Charles’s clothes, and she notices that they are not water-damaged, even though her son was supposedly drowned. Lorrique confesses everything and agrees to help lure Hoffman into a trap, but Hoffman murders him. Mathias and Saxony hang up his dead body near a cave where Hoffman…
