Oh stay and hear me speak or see me die. (Enter Lodovico and Giacono.) Well, well, it becomes not a friend to touch the deadly wounds of his friend with a smiling countenance. Prithee have done. Good Lodovico, if thou lovest me, leave me; thou comest to consaile me from that, which is joined with my soul in eternity: I must and will do what I do. If thou knewest how vain thou seemest. Oh vanity, vanity. For shame hold thy tongue, me thinks thy wit should feel how stale are these love storms, and with what general privilege love pierses the worthiest. Seek to help thy friend, not mock him. Shee'll not endure me: But when is the happy hour of our meeting? Sounds a twelvemonth. Celestial sphere, wherein more beauty shines. Then on Dardanian Ida, where the pride Of heavens selected beauty's strived for prize. Model of heavenly beauty. Unworthy I t'approach the furthest step to that felicity that shines in her. Oh sacred goddess, what soever thou art That in mere pity to preserve a soul From undeserved destruction, hast vouchsafed To take Aemilia's shape. Dear mistress, to avoid that likely danger, Vouchsafe me only private conference, And it's the fullness of my present Hope's. Exeunt. Deer life, be resolute, that no respect Heighted above the compass of your love, Depress the equal comforts it retains; For since it finds a firm consent in both, And both our births and years agree so well, If both our aged parents should refuse, For any common object of the world, To give their hands to ours, let us resolve To live together Like our lives and souls. So runs the mutual current of my wish, And with such stayed and circumspect respects, We may so serve and govern our desires, That till fit observation of our father's, Prefer the motion to them; we may love Without their knowledge and the skill of any, Save only of my true friend Lodowick. Not far I know, For in some place, he watches to prevent The feared danger of your father's presence. Angelo? what news? Dear life, farewell, wee'll shortly meet again, So parts the dying body from the soul; As I depart from my Aemilia. Shift me Angelo? why man? Very good sir, I will be ruled by you, and after lear e the mysteries. Exit Aurel. HOld, take my doublet too, my hat and all, and quickly High thee to thy sweet. Gods me, sweet friend, wouldst thou use such a slight to any one that lay within my walk? who was thy mean to her? God's ut friend, what a notorious oversight was that? and what a violent injury unto thy friend? My friend a privy lover? I'de have sworn Love might spend all his shafts at butterflies As well as at his bosom. Oh my sweet friend, come I'll know more of this, And tell thee all our fortune, hence good Angelo. There's thy wife too, Quintiliano Do so, and wee'll take up the tother. (Enter Angelo.) How now Leonoro, you forget your self too much, to grow outrageous in this company. Some error makes you mistake Leonor , I assure my self. And to be before me in love. Wretch that I am, how she loathes me? if I abide her, I shall consume in the lightnings of her anger. (Enter Lodovico with Aemilia.) I am glad it rests in my kind servant Angelo. Angelo, well met, it lies in thee now, make me no more thy master, but thy friend, and for ever happy in thy friendship. My friend Lodovico here hath told me, what thou reuealedst to him to day, touching his uncle Lorenzo, and his louesute to Francischina. Which if thou dost Angelo, be sure of reward to thy wishes. Friend Lodovico, by my life, well welcome to this my father's backside.
Plot summary
Plot — May Day
It is May morning. In accordance with the season, old Lorenzo is planning an amorous, adulterous adventure with Francischina, and approaches her kinsman Angelo to act as go-between. Francischina’s husband too is going out with his gull, Innocentio, who is to observe gentlemanly behaviour at an ordinary. Lodovico makes doubly sure of his absence by introducing him to an admirer, Giovanelli, and they go to a tavern together. He is implicated in a second plot which in turn requires Lorenzo to be away from his home: Lorenzo’s daughter Aemilia, whom he plans to marry against her will to Gasparo, loves Aurelio, and Lodovico has promised to bring him to her at the house’s rear terrace. Meanwhile, Leonoro conspires with Temperance to win the love of Lucretia, Aurelio’s cousin. Nothing goes entirely according to plan. Lorenzo comes to Francischina disguised as a chimney-sweep, so that he can enter the house without risk to her honour, but Lodovico lets his friends in on the secret and they tease him on the way; later Angelo pretends to be Quintiliano coming home early, and frightens Lorenzo into hiding. Aurelio’s assignation with Aemilia turns out to involve more than talking when Lodovico provides a rope ladder and he climbs up onto the terrace, which gives access to her bedroom. Lodovico waits below, muffled in his cloak, and Temperance mistakes him for Leonoro; she invites him in just as the real Leonoro arrives and is taken to Lucretia’s chamber. When he gets into bed with her, however, the liaison ends with fighting when he discovers ‘her’ to be a cross- dressed man. Meanwhile Quintiliano cozens Giovanelli of his money and then returns home drunk to find Lorenzo, still disguised, hiding in his coal-house. Lorenzo goes home in turn and discovers Aurelio and Aemilia together; Angelo helps Aurelio escape while Lorenzo is changing out of his disguise before fetching the Provost to administer justice, then substitutes Francischina in Aurelio’s clothes so that Lorenzo will infer that he misunderstood an innocent jest. Everyone goes to the May night show at Honorio’s house, which includes a masque. Leonoro and Quintiliano have the page Lionel cross-dress as a woman with a view to tricking Innocentio into chatting her up. Leonoro confronts Lodovico over his liaison with ‘Lucretia’, and he explains what happened. In fact ‘she’ is really Lucretio, whose father was a Sicilian exile and close friend of Aurelio’s family. ‘Lionel’ turns out to be Lucretio’s fiancée…
