Plot summary
Plot — The Gentleman Usher (Vincentio and Margaret)
Duke Alfonso and his son Vincentio are rivals for the love of Lady Margaret. The court visits her father Lasso's house, and two dramatic entertainments are staged. First the Duke engages his resented new favourite, Medice, to perform a wooing speech in a masque. The illiterate Medice forgets his lines, but the Duke has anticipated this and primed an understudy: Strozza describes how the Duke was taken captive while hunting a boar, and can only be released by Margaret's love, which she duly grants. Lasso reciprocates with a pastoral about the discontents of virginity; Margaret is invited to watch it from the place of honour as if she were Duchess. Privately, however, Margaret prefers Vincentio, and makes an assignation with him. As go-between, she selects her father's gentleman usher, Bassiolo, whom she .considers easily corruptible: Vincentio suborns him with the expectation of advancement when he succeeds his father as Duke. and he carries a love-letter to Margaret; she gets him to draft a reply, but then writes her own letter instead. The lovers meet, and attempt to pre-empt their fathers' plans by taking an oath of marriage.Strazza. is shot while out hunting in a failed assassination attempt instigated by Medice. The doctor is unable to remove the arrow-head safely, but Strozza acquires precognitive vision and predicts that in seven days it will fall out of its own accdrd. Medice investigates Margaret's coyness. and enlists the help of her aunt Cortezza by getting her drunk. Foolishly enamoured of Medice, Cortezza searches the house and finds Vincentio's letter. Lasso pressurizes Margaret to accept the Duke's suit, and tries to enlist Ba.ssiolo's help, but Margaret blackmails him with the letter he wrote for her. With Cortezza's help, Alfonso witnesses an assignation between Margaret and Vincentio. The Dulce sends Medice to arrest Vincentio, but a fit of paternal feeling makes him send further instructions that the prince is not to be hurt. Strozza's prediction is fulfilled: the arrow-head falls out, and he plans to offer it as a relic in Rome. His foresight reveals that Vincentio is in danger: Medice has assaulted and wounded him. Meanwhile the despairing Margaret, imprisoned in a tower, anoints her face in an effort to destroy her beauty and discourage the Duke. Wounded Vincentio, however, reaffirms his commitment to her, and the doctor offers to cure her scarred face.. Alfonso accepts his son's marriage; Bassiolo is honoured for promoting it, and…
