What, Spectrum once again? Why noble Cerberus, nothing but patch-panel stuff, old gally-mawfreies and cotten-candle eloquence? out you bawling bandog fox f rd slave: you dried Stockfish you, out of my sighed. Well 'tis no matter: I'll set me down and see't, and for fault of a better, I'll supply the plate of a scurvy Prologue. Spectrum is a looking glass indeed, Wherein a man a History may read, Of base conceits and damned roguery: The very sink of hellbred villainy. Out you soused gurnet, you Woolfist, be gone I say and bid the Players dispatch and come away quickly, and tell their fiery Poet that before I have done with him; I'll make him do penance upon a stage in a Calves skin. Prithee what tricks canst thou do? Mass and 'tis well done, now I see thou canst worser e something, hold thee the twelve pence for thy labour Go to that barme-froth Poet and to him say, He quite has lost the Title of his play, His Calve skin jests from hence are clean exiled, Thus once you see that Wily is beguiled. Now kind Spectators, I dare boldly say, You all are welcome to our Authors play: Be still a while, and ere we go, Weel make your eyes with laughter flow. Let Momus mates judge how they list, We fear not what they babble: Nor any paltry Poets pen, Amongst that rascal rabble. But time forbids me further speech, My tongue must stop his raze: My time is come, I must be dumb, And give the Actors place. A Heavy purse makes a light heart: Oh the con sideration of this pouch, this pouch! Why he that has money, has hearts ease and the world in a string. Oh this read chink, and silver coin, it is the con solation of the World. I can fit at home quietly in my chair, and send out my and gels by sea, and by land, and bid fly villains & fetch in ten in the hundred, I and a better penny too. Let me see, I have but two children in all the world to bestow my goods upon, Fortunatus my son & Lelia my daughter. For my son, he fol lowes the wars, and that which he gets with swaggering, he spends in swaggering: but I'll curb him, his allowance whilst live shall be small, and so he shall be sure not to spend much: And if I die I will leave him a portion, that (if he will be a good husband and follow his father's steps) shall maintain him Like a gentleman: and if he will not, let follow his own humour till he be weary of it, and so let him go: now for my daughter she is my only joy, & the staff of my age, and I have bestowed good bringing up upon his (barlady): why she is een modesty it self, it does me good to look on his. Now if I can harken out some wealthy marriage for his, I have my only desire. Mass, and well remembered, here's my neighbour Ploddall hard by, has but one only son, and (let me see) I take it, his Lands are better than five thousand pounds; now if I can make a match between his son and my daughter, and so join his Land and my money together, Oh 'twill be a blessed union. Well I'll in, and get a Scrivener, I'll write, to him about it presently: But stay here come M. Churmes the Lawer, I'll desire him to do so much.
Plot summary
Plot — Wily Beguiled
Grip the usurer wants to marry his daughter Lelia to the foolish son of his neighbour, Ploddall, in order to gain control of Ploddall’s extensive land-holdings. For her part, Lelia loves the scholar Sophos, but Grip doesn’t think him rich enough and warns the young man off. The fathers agree and Churms the lawyer is engaged to draw up the marriage contract. Churms persuades Grip to let him visit her to intercede for Peter Ploddall, and also agrees to act as an intermediary woeer for Sophos; but all the while his objective is to win Lelia for himself. Meanwhile he engages Robin Goodfellow to provide Peter with a fake love-philtre for Lelia, and to frame Sophos for rape so that Lelia will fall out of love with him. Robin in turn plans to cozen Churms of Lelia and Grip of his money; but his plotting is overheard by Grip’s son, Fortunatus, who has just returned from the wars. Fortunatus finds the despairing Sophos sleeping in the woods, and listens to his woes. It becomes clear that Churms is double-crossing Sophos, so Fortunatus lays a plot. At her brother's behest, Lelia arranges to abscond with Churms, who capitalizes Grip’s debts at less than their true value in order to finance the elopement. While Fortunatus and Sophos are waiting ===== PAGE 368 ===== to.intercept Churms, Robin tries to frighten Sophos by dressing up as the devil, but Fortunatus beats him and forces him to admit his misdeeds. When the eloping ‘couple’ arrive, Fortunatus intervenes and asks Lelia to choose between Sophos and Churms; she chooses Sophos. They take up temporary residence in a hermitage while Fortunatus straightens things out with their father. Grip learns independently of Churms’s treachery - both amatory and financial - and despairs. Fortunatus offers to prevent the elopement and bring Lelia back, provided that Grip agrees to her marrying Sophos. He does, and Fortunatus fetches the happy couple home.
