Sir Gerontus, because you are the palinti e, you first your mind shall say, Declare the cause you did arrest this merchant yesterday. Sir Gerontus you know, if any man forsake his faith, King, country, and become a Mahomet. All debts are paid, 'tis the law of our Realm, and you may not gain say it. Semo: Mercadorus is this true that Gerontus does tell? Then it is but a folly to make many words. Senior Mercado rus draw near. Lay your hand on this book, and say after me. Say I Mercadorus do utterly renounce before all the world, my duty to my Prince, my honour to my parents, and my good will to my country. But eneor mercadorus, I trow you will be a Turk for all this. Why then it is as sir Gerontus said, you did more for the gree dines of the money. Then for any zeal or good will you bore to Turkey. One may judge and speak truth, as appears by this, Jews seek to excel in Christianity, & Christians in Iewishnes. Seruiseable Diligence, bring hither such prisoners as are in your custody. Nor where is that wretch Dissimulation? Fraud: where is he become? What is become of Usury? Tell me, when you herd of Simony? Fetch Lucar and Conscience to the Bar. Stand forth: Diligence divide them a sunder. Impudent, canst thou deny deeds so manifestly known. Thy hateful heart declares thy wicked life, In the abundance of thy abomination all evils are rife: But what sayest thou Conscience to thy accusation that art accused to have been bawd unto Lucar, and spotted with all abomination. What letter is that in thy bosom Conscience? Diligence reach it hither. Conscience speak on, let me heart what thou canst say, For I know in singleness thou wilt a truth bewray. Conscience where hadst thou this letter? How now mallepart stand you still in defence or no? This letter declares thy guilty Conscience, how sayest thou is it not for Tell me, why standest How in a maze? speak quickly: Hadst thou thy tongue so liberal, and now stand to study? It is happy that by Conscience thy abomination is known, Wherefore I pronounce judgement against thee on this wise: Thou shalt pass to the place of darkness, where thou shalt hear fear full cries. Weeping, wailing, gnashing of teeth, and torment without end, Burning in the lake of fire and brunstone because thou canst not amend: Wherefore Diligence convey her hence, throw her down to the lowest hell, Where the infernal sprites and damned ghosts do dwell. And bring forth Love. Declare that cause Conscience at large, how thou con est so spotted, Whereby many by thee hath been greatly infected: For under the colour of Conscience thou deceiuedst many, Causing them to difile the temple of God, which is men body: A clean conscience is a sacrifice: Gods own resting place, Why wast thou then corrupted so, and spotted on thy face? Oh Conscience, shall cankered quam corrupt thy heart? Or shall want in this world cause thee to feel everlasting sma to Oh Conscience what a small time thou hast on earth to live, why dost thou not then, to God all honour give? Considering the time is everlasting that thou shalt live in bliss, If by thy life thou rise from death, to judgement mercy, and forgiveness. Stand aside Conscience, bring Love to the bar. What sayest thou to thy deformity, who was the cause? Did Lucar choke thee so, that thou gavest thy self over to lust? And did prodigal expenses cause thee in Dissimulation to trust? Thou wast pure Love, and art thou become a monster, Bolstering thy self upon the lasciviousness of Lucar? Love answer for thy self, speak in thy defence. Then judgement I pronounce on thee, because thou followed Lucar, Whereby thou hast sold thy soul to feel Like torment with her, Which torments comprehended are in the worm of Conscience, who raging still, shall never have end, a plague for thine offence, Care shall be thy comfort, and sorrow shall thy life sustain, thou shalt be dying, yet never dead, but pining still in endless pain. Diligence convey her to Lucar, let that be her reward, Because unto her cankered coin she gave her whole regard. But as for Conscience, carry her to prison, there to remain until the day of general session: Thus we make and end, Knowing that the best of us all may amend: Which God grant to his good will and pleasure, That we be not corrupted with the unsatiate desire of vanishing earthly treasure: For Covetousness is the cause of wresting men Conscience, Therefore restrain thy lust, and thou shalt shun the offence.
Plot summary
Plot — The Three Ladies of London
Lady Love and Lady Conscience are concerned that Lady Lucre now rules in London, but Fame assures them that she and her adherents will meet their due punishment in the end. Four knaves and Simplicity, a penurious miller, go to London in the hope of employment by one of the ladies. Conscience rejects their applications, but Love agrees to take on Simplicity; the knaves find positions in Lucre’s household. Out of work because foreigners have taken all the jobs, Artifex also seeks a place with Lucre. Simplicity procures a testimonial from Conscience for his cousin Sincerity, who seeks a benefice; but he is unable to get anything from Simony because he has no bribe to offer. Dissimulation fobs him off with the parsonage of St Nihil — nothing - and an invitation to dine with Nemo — nobody — is likewise worthless (though Simplicity has _ difficulty understanding this). Simony employs Sir Peter Pleaseman, who can be either Protestant or Catholic as it suits his circumstances, as Lucre’s chaplain. Conscience is forced to sell her cottage to Lucre, but hopes to stay on as a sitting tenant. Usury threatens eviction; there is a proposal to pack the house with foreigners who will require less living space than English tenants. Eventually he relents and quadruples the rent instead. Love and Conscience are reduced to sending Usury their clothes in lieu of payment, but Dissimulation gives Simplicity money to redeem one of the gowns. He intended it to be Love’s, since he cares nothing for Conscience, but Simplicity returns Conscience’s clothes and delivers Love’s to Usury. Lucre enters an agreement with the Italian merchant Mercadore, whereby he will export essential materials and foodstuffs from England, and import foreign trinkets for gentlewomen. Mercadore goes to Turkey to procure knick-knacks, and encounters the Jew Gerontus. Two years ago, he borrowed a lot of money from Gerontus and avoided paying it back by skipping the country. Gerontus is happy to help in the supply of 1581 worthless tat to England, but eventually loses patience with Mercadore’s promises to pay his debt, and has him arrested. Mercadore proposes converting to Islam, which will legally void all his past obligations. Fearing that he might be blamed for a Christian’s apostasy, Gerontus cancels the debt, whereupon Mercadore’s Muslim convictions evaporate. Usury murders Hospitality and goes into hiding with a rich man, who protects him; his pardon is eventually procured by a courtier. Conscience and…
