Full speech

Furbo no more, unless thy words were charms Of power to revive him: Antonio's dead. He's dead, and in his death hath buried All my delights: my ears are deaf to music That sounds of pleasure: sing then the doleful'st notes That ere were set by melancholy: Oh Antonio! Flow streams of liquid salt from my sad eyes, To celebrate his mournful exequies. Antonio's dead, he's dead, and I remain To draw my poor life in continual pain, Till it have paid to his sad memory Duty of love: o then most willingly Drowned with my tears, as he with waves, I die. Break thy sad strings, and instrument: Oh strange! he's here. Signior Antonio! my heart's sweet content! My life and better portion of my soul! Are you returned? and safe? for whose sad death I spent such streams of tears, and gusts of sighs? Or is't my love, that to my longing fancy Frames your desired shape, and mocks my senses? With my best friend, commander of my life, My most beloved Antonio. Sir to command me, as you have done ever, To what you please: for all my liberty Lies in your service. Have you forgotten my husband? and angry roarer? Whence grows this fear? how come you so respectful? You were not wont be numbed with such a coldness. Go in sweet life, go in. Your name? None sir. Alas I am clean undone, it is my Husband. There still. Not to day, good sir, to morrow will serve as well. It's more then I can carry. I thank you. Forget Antonio, Wbose deer remembrance does inform the soul Of your poor servant Bevilona ? no, No, had you died, it had not quenched one spark Of sweet affection which your love hath kindled In this warm breast. Wil't please you Enter, and rest your self, refresh the weariness Of your hard travel: I have good wine and fruits, My husband's out of town: you shall command My house, & all that's in't. There's one within my Kitchen ready strung: go in. Who's that so boldly knocks? I am not within; Or busy: Why so importunate? who is't? Oj me! my Husband! Oj me wretch, it's my Husband. Oh sir, Has more outrageous devils in his rage, Then names. As you respect your life, avoid him. Down at that window. He has the keys. Down at some window, as you love your life, Tender my honour, and your safety. Be patient but a little; I come instantly. I cannot stay. There stands and empty Hogshead with a false bottom To open and shut at pleasure: come hither, in, In, as you love your life. In, in, there's none. I tunned him up, would, would, would, I fear he'll fallen a working. Fetched your self. Signior Antonio, as you love your life Lie still and close, for if you stir you die. One that you dare not touch.

Plot summary

Plot — Albumazar
The neighbours Pandolfo and Antonio, both widowers, have arranged to marry each other’s daughters; but before they can do so, Antonio is lost and presumed dead on an overseas voyage, and the plan goes into abeyance because his son Lelio disapproves of Pandolfo as a potential brother-in-law. Albumazar’s accomplice Furbo has gained access to Pandolfo’s household, posing as his daughter’s tutor, and has learned of his .- amorous aspirations, and also his credulity about. magic and astrology. Albumazar plans to trick him, and sets about demonstrating his occult power. Ronca shows Pandolfo some of the astrologer’s amazing inventions: a telescope and an ‘otacousticon’ (actually a pair of ass’s ears) which allow him to see and hear things at a distance. Albumazar then predicts Pandolfo’s marriage, and also a stabbing which his associates then enact in a brawl. Pandolfo asks the astrologer to raise Antonio’s ghost, but instead Albumazar undertakes to transform the tenant farmer Trincalo into Antonio’s likeness for one day, so that he can give Flavia in marriage to Pandolfo. Trincalo agrees because this will give him access to Antonio’s household, and therefore to the maid Armellina, whom he loves. Pandolfo is required to prepare a room for the metamorphosis, laid out with valuable possessions. When he begins to have second thoughts about paying Albumazar, his servant Cricca suggests that he should pretend to have been robbed of his valuables; but when they are indeed stolen, Albumazar pretends in turn that the transformed Trincalo has just locked them away for safe keeping. After undergoing the fake metamorphosis, Trincalo is told he may not look at himself in a mirror for fear of breaking the spell. Ronca and Harpax greet him as Antonio, and pretend to be his debtor and creditor respectively, but Trincalo pays Harpax less than he was ===== PAGE 445 ===== 1615 given by Ronca, who has to steal back the balance. To buy time to spirit away Pandolfo’s goods, the tricksters divert him with Bevilona the courtesan, who pretends to be a gentlewoman in love with Antonio, and hides him from her husband. The real Antonio returns unexpectedly, and is taken for the transformed Trincalo: he does not understand when Pandolfo asks after his missing property, and his son and daughter, forewarned of the planned trick, beat him out of his own house. He meets Trincalo, who is still posing as him, and a duel is proposed. Lelio and Cricca realize the truth when they see the two men…
