Fellow, why dost thou show me thus to the world? Bear me to prison, where I am committed. From too much liberty, (my Lucio ) Liberty As surfeit is the father of much fast, So every Scope by the immoderate use Turns to restraint: Our Nature's do pursue Like Rats that rauyn down their proper Bane, A thirsty evil, and when we drink, we die. What (but to speak of) would offend again. No. Call it so. One word, good friend: Lucio, a word with you. Thus stands it with me: upon a true contract I God possession of Iulietas bed, You know the Lady, she is fast my wife, Save that we do the denunciation lack Of outward Order. This we came not to, Only for propagation of a Dowry Remaining in the Coffer of her friends, From whom we thought it meet to hide our Love Till Time had made them for us. But it chances The stealth of our most mutual entertainment With Character too gross, is writ on Juliet. Unhappily, even so. And the new Deputy, now for the Duke, Whither it be the fault and glimpse of newness, Or whither that the body public, be A horse whereon the Governor does ride, Who newly in the Seat, that it may know He can command; lets it strait feel the spur: Whither the Tirranny be in his place, Or in his Eminence that fills it up I stagger in: But this new Governor Awakes me all the enrolled penalties Which have (Like vn-scowr'd Armour) hung by the wall So long, that ninteene Zodiacs have gone round, And none of them been worn; and for a name Now puts the drowsy and neglected Act Freshly on me: it's surely for a name. I have done so, but he's not to be found. I prithee (Lucio) do me this kind service: This day, my sister should the Cloister enter, And there receive her approbation. Acquaint her with the danger of my state, Implore her, in my voice, that she make friends To the strict Deputy: bid her self assay him, I have great hope in that: for in her youth There is a prove and speechless dialect, Such as move men: beside, she hath prosperous Art When she will play with reason, and discourse, And well she can persuade. I thank you good friend Lucio. Come Officer, away. The miserable have no other medicine But only hope: In have hope to live, and am prepared to die. I humbly thank you. To sue to live, I find I seek to die, And seeking death, find life: Let it come on. Most boly Sir; I thank you. Now sister, what's the comfort? Perpetual durance? Why give you me this shame? Think you I can a resolution fetch From flowery tenderness? If I must die, I will encounter darkness as a bride, And hug it in mine arms. The prenzie, Angelo ? O heavens, it cannot be. If it were damnable, he being so wise, Why would he for the momentary trick Be perdurably fin'de? O Isabel. Death is a fearful thing. I, but to die, and go we know not where, To lie in cold obstruction, and to rot, This sensible warm motion, to become A kneaded clod; And the delighted spirit To both in fiery floods, or to recide In thrilling Region of thicke-ribbed Ice, To be imprisoned in the viewless winds And blown with restless violence round about The pendant world: or to be worse then worst Of those, that lawless and incertain thought, Imagine howling, it's too horrible. The weariest, and most loathed worldly life That Age, Ache, perjury, and imprisonment Can lay on nature, is a Paradise To what we fear of death. Sweet Sister, let me live. What sin you do, to save a brother's life, Nature dispenses with the deed so far, That it becomes a virtue. Nay hear me Isabel. O hear me Isabella. Let me ask my sister pardon, I am so out of love with life, that I will sue to be rid of it. As fast locked up in sleep, as guiltless labour, When it lies starkely in the Travellers bones, He will not wake. Thus can the demigod (Authority) Make us pay down, for our offence, by weight The words of heaven on whom it will, it will, On whom it will not (so) yet still it's joust. Is there no remedy? But is there any? But in what nature? Let me know the point. Thou shalt not do't. Thanks deer Isabel. Yes. Has he affections in him, That thus can make him bite the Law by the nose, When he would force it? Sure it is no sin, Or of the deadly seven it is the least.
Plot summary
Plot — Measure for Measure
Duke Vincentio appoints Angelo as his deputy during his absence from Vienna, but arranges to remain in the city disguised as a friar. He explains to Friar Thomas, who helps with the disguise, that his objective is the restoration of the strict penal laws against sexual immorality which he has allowed to slip; Angelo, famous for his rectitude, will be able to effect this without risk of personal censure. But the Duke is also interested in how Angelo himself will respond to the challenges and temptations of power. Angelo does as expected, enforcing the laws which make begetting a child out of wedlock a capital crime. Claudio is arrested: he has made his fiancée Julietta pregnant, having been unable to have their marriage publicly solemnized because her family disapproves and would withhold her dowry. Claudio asks his friend Lucio to get his sister Isabella, who is about to enter a nunnery, to intercede with Angelo on his behalf. Isabella goes to see Angelo, who initially rejects her pleas, but then defers a decision and asks to see her again. At the second meeting, he offers her a bargain: Claudio’s life will be spared in exchange for sex with her. When he learns of the proposal, Claudio is torn between honour and fear, but finally urges Isabella to accept; she is chastely unwilling to do so. The Duke overhears their conversation, enjoins Claudio to prepare himself for death, and offers Isabella an option. Angelo was engaged to marry Mariana, but jilted her after her dowry was lost at sea. As the Duke suggests, Isabella consents to sex with Angelo, but briefly and in darkness; Mariana then takes her place for the act itself, preserving Isabella’s chastity. Angelo, however, sends a message to the prison reinforcing the execution order and demanding that Claudio’s head be sent by way of proof. There is another prisoner under sentence of death, Barnardine, so the Duke proposes beheading him in Claudio’s place; but Barnardine is drunk and would therefore be damned if executed now. Luckily a third prisoner has just died of a fever, and his head is sent to Angelo as Claudio’s; Claudio himself is hidden in the prison pending the Duke’s return, and Isabella told that he has been executed. The Duke sends Angelo orders concerning his return: Angelo is to meet him at the city gates to give up his commission, and any grievances against him will be dealt with there. Isabella duly sues for justice, but the Duke refuses to believe her story, citing Angelo’s reputation for…
