To a soldier sir David cannot be too liberal, Yet that I may give no more then a poor knight is able And not presume as a mighty Earl, I give my Lord four hundred, four score, And nineteen pounds: And so my lord of Sussex I am behind you and ace. Enough of to is my Lord at once, What will you that I hold the king in hand, Or what shall I especially advise, Sitting in counsel with the English lords, That so my counsel may avail my friends? Soft is it not Meredeth I behold? Not too much prowess good my lord at once. Some talk of policy another w isle. I theres a Card that puts us to our trump, For might I see the star of Leisters loins, It were enough to darken and obscure, This Edwards glory, fortune, and his pride: First hereof can I put you out of doubt, Lord Mortimor of the king hath her in charge, And honourably intreats your Elinor, Some thinks he prays Lluellen were in heaven, And thereby Hope's to coache his love on earth. Go to, it shall be so, so shall it be, Edward is full resolved of thy faith, So are the English lords and Barons all: Then what may let thee to intrude on them, Some new found stratagem to feel their wit, It is enough: Meredeth take my weapons, I am your prisoner, say so at the least, Go hence, and when you parley on the walls, Make show of monstrous tyranny you intend, To execute on me, as on the man, That shamefully rebels gainst kin and kind: And lea thou have thy love, and make thy kind: With such conditions as shall best concern, David must die say thou a shameful death, Edward perhaps with ruth and pity moved, Will in exchange yield Elinor to thee, And thou by me shalt gain thy hearts desire. Renowned England, star of Edwards Globe, My liefest lord and sweetest Sovereign, Glorious and happy is this chan e to me, To reap this fame and honour in my death, That I was hewed with soul defiled hands, For my beloved king and countries good, And died in grace and favour with my prince: Seize on me bloody butchers with your paws, It is but temporal that you can inflict. Oh gracious heavens, dissolve me into clay, This tyranny is more then flesh can bear. I can assure your highness what I know, The false Lluellen will not run nor go Or give and inch of ground come man for man, Nor that proud rebel called little John, To him that wields the massiest sword of England, I do my Lord and blindfold thither can I run. Villains, Traitors to the ancient glory and re noun of Cambria, Morris Vaghan art thou there, and thou proud Lord of Anglesee. Oh good master give me leave, my hand is in a little, I trust I recover my los es. How much money hast thou about thee? Upon them brother let them not breath. Base Earl now does David triumph in thine over throw, aye is me Lluellen at the fe of Longshanks. Edward relieve my brother and Mortimor lives. Br er a chafes, but hard was your hap to be overmastered by the coward. But to e Potter, o the vi lain will never out of my mind while I live, and I w late to be revenged on him will e. I go where my star leads me, and die in my countries joust cause and quarrel. The sweetest sun that ere I saw to shine. I am true to Wales, and so have been friends since my birth, and that shall the King of England know to his cost.
Plot summary
Plot — Edward the First
Edwardilongshanks returns from the crusades to find that in his absence both his father and his son have 1591 died, and that he is now King of England. He makes provision to house his wounded veterans, and all the nobility contribute handsomely. His @W@8n asks him to defer the coronation to give her time to send to Spain for the latest fashions. MEW was planning to take advantage of Edward’s absence to secure his power in Wales. A Welshliprophet encourages him with the assertion that he will mount higher than all his kin. Now he intends reprisals against Edward for the detention of his betrothed wife, DA@VMEI@HGr, daughter of an English rebel. His brother DaWid, a spy in the English court, proposes getting himself captured by the Welsh in order to create a pretext for an exchange of prisoners. The plan goes awry when the Welsh soldiers agree to make peace with the English, on condition that Edward does not impose direct rule from England. Llewelyn and his entourage pose as Robin Hood, and waylay passers-by in the forest. M@riimiér, who loves Lady Eleanor, goes to Wales and joins in the masquerade by assuming the identity of the potter from the Robin Hood story; but this means he gets a thrashing. To comply with the Welsh demand for a Welsh-born prince, Edward summons the pregnant Queen to Wales, where she gives birth to a son: Edward, Prince of Wales. The loyal Welsh present the child with a frieze mantle, but the Queen takes offence at the homespun fabric. Edward promises her a boon, and she demands that the English men should cut their long hair and beards, and that the English women’s breasts should be likewise amputated; Edward is forced to consent, but the Queen is displeased that he insists on being the first to go under the barber, and withdraws her request when he proposes that she should likewise undergo the first mastectomy. Prince Edward is christened and the Queen’s daughter, J6am, married to the BarllshiGlowcester. The nine lords of Scotland are unable to agree which of them should be king, so they approach Edward to adjudicate. He crowns JOHHMBalliG], who endows an Oxford college in gratitude, but later asserts Scotland’s independence from England. In Wales, Edward is set upon by Llewelyn and his crew of outlaws, who demand half his money. Instead he proposes single combat, winner take all. Llewelyn is beaten, but Edward spares his life in order to save Mortimer. He then goes to deal with the Scottish insurrection, leaving Mortimer to mop up…
