We are sent to be your servants. My name is Blood. Air was my father, and my mother a light-heeled madame that kept a vaulting-school at the sign of Virg . As she was one day practi sing a high trio she lost her hold, and fell down into my father's regions, where had not he kind man stopped her about though middle, she had brake her neck against a rock of Ice that hung beneath her, and Blood had not been as he is, a Dancer sir. Garbs and postures of the body. Here's and honour for a Lord; a backfall for a Lady, and a high ri sing is best in and active gallant. But pardon moi monsieur, it do strain a de back too much. Here's a traverse for a nimble Lawyer. A hop and skip shall raise the son of a Cobbler well underlaid with pieces to the govern meant of a province, Till overmuch ambitious cutting wears him into his Last. A turn above ground for a Mercurial pickpocket, and and easy passage to destru ction for him that dances after infected wantonness Cum multis aliis. Then Phlegm must cool you. Blood's prevented, and the expectation of so many children begotten on several mother's that should dote on the quivering of my calves, and the strength of my back is utterly frustrate. No Lady of liberty must admire this passage, or that skipping, Till her veins swell with my addition. I must no more run here and there to tickle her sense, and fright the g eene-sicknesse from her complexion. Why, is not Phlegm a Physician? Could you but dance sir, and show your self active before her, 'twere impossible for her to hold out Till the discovery of one knave amongst many officers. Dancing is the most taking: if a man rise well, his Mi stress cannot choose but fallen. Blood would be heated better. This leg's not right. Carry your toes wider. Now do your cinque pass cleanly. I am very joyful: this tickles me. I'll empty his veins. Worthier then Choler. Thou hast inflamed me.
Plot summary
Plot — Microcosmus
The four elements, children of Nature and Janus, fight with one another. Janus' attempts to discipline them prove ineffectual, so Nature tries to persuade them to procreate. She invokes the help of Love, who creates concord between the elements through the music of the spheres. Earth gives birth to Physander, the perfect being. The four humours become his servants, and Love brings him Bellanima to be his wife. But Bellanima brings with her a good and bad genius, who can each influence Physander's moral actions. He succumbs to temptation, dismisses the good genius, and seeks out the whore Sensuality. The four humours suggest ways of wooing her: Choler proposes violence, Blood, dance, Phlegm, language, and Melancholy, pathos. The five senses, Sensuality's servants, conduct him to her, and she seduces him with the promise of luxury. Bellanima attempts to reclaim him, but he refuses her. After sleeping with Sensuality, Physander falls ill. The humours drunkenly attack him, and Sensuality disowns him. He feels ashamed at having left his wife for a whore. Bellanima summons Temperance to cure his wounds; she prescribes a simple life and frugal diet, and he is cured. The evil genius still maliciously seeks his destruction, and plans to drive him to suicide through remorse. He is tormented by Furies and accused before the court of Conscience; Despair prosecutes, andHope speaks for thedefence. Physander admits his marital crimes, but his penitence and commitment to future fidelity save him from punishment. With no further power over him, the evil genius can only torment herself; Sensuality, reduced to beggary, joins her on the road to Hell. Love accepts Physander and Bellanima into Elysium, and they are crowned with stars.
