Plot summary
Plot — Metropolis Coronata: The Triumphs of Ancient Drapery
As he is about to embark for his trip to Westminster, the new Lord Mayor of London is met, first by the Argonauts and then by the ghost of Sir Henry Fitz-Alwin, attended by eight virtues representing eight previous Draper Lord Mayors: Neptune has allowed him to ride on his sea-chariot, a whale, to greet the new incumbent. When the Lord Mayor gets aboard his barge, Sir Henry salutes him, pleased that the Lord Mayor is to be a draper fora — second year running: he will bring fame to the city, as Jason brought the golden fleece from Colchis. ; Five pageants are presented on land: a ship named the Joel; Neptune and Thames, riding on a lion and a sea-horse; the Argo; the chariot of man’s life, driven by Time; and a pageant of London and the twelve livery companies. Time expounds the devices to the Lord Mayor. In the evening, the Lord Mayor is being conducted home. Sir Henry Fitz-Alwin returns and bids him farewell. But the entertainment is not over: the day has been so busy that Robin Hood and his merry men have not had the chance to pay their respects; at Friar Tuck’s request, they sing a song.
