Master Salewood Exceedingly well met in Town, comes your Father up this Term? But will she pass so think you? They're worthy spirits i'faith, herd you the News? Mistress Difficult is fallen a widow. Easily dead sir. What a question's that? when should a Lawyer die but in the vacation, he ha no leisure to die in the Term time, beside the Noise there would fetch him again. Faith some say he died of and old grief he had, that the vacation was fourteen weeks long. He savours, stop your Nose, no more of him. What gentleman might that be? Faith sir, I am vildly riuald! One Andrew Lethe crept to a little warmth, and now so proud that he forgets all storms, one that never wore apparel, but Like ditches 'twas cast before he had it, now shines bright in rich embroideries, him master Quomodo of fects, the daughter him, the mother only me, I rest most doubtful, my side being wookest. Slid master Quomodo? He warned me his house, and I hate he should see me abroad! No, Andro Lethe! Has forgotten his father's name, poor Walter Gruill that begotten him, fed him, and brought him up. No; 'twas from his thoughts, he brought him up below. Amongst strange eyes that no more know him, then he knows him self, thats nothing now, for master Andro Lethe, a gentleman of most received parts, forgetfulness, Lust, Impudence, and Falsehood, and one especi all Courtly quality; to wit, no wit at all, I am his Rival for Quomodoes daughter, but he knows it not. O thats a warning to make our duties ready. Puh, wish his health a while, heel be laid shortly, let him gorge Venison for a time, our doctors will bring him to dry mutton; seem respective to make his pride swell Like a Toad with dew. Sweet master Lethe. Cast it. Gentlemen I would sworn I'll change the room: dice? Fie, such and early Termer? And how looks thy little venturing Cousin? Fie, there are Doctors enough in Town will string her again, and make her found as sweet as ere she did, is she not married yet? Nay come, will you draw in Gentlemen? set me: The Devil and his Angels. O worse then consumption of the Liver! consump cion of the patrimony. Forgive me, my post city, yet ungotten. Few know the sweets that the plain life allows. Vild son that surfeits of his father's brows. Tenants! When's our next meeting Gentlemen? And that's a Villainous torment. And not for love? this makes for me his Rival, bear witness. And ene now he called me by it. First as a contempt of that reverend Ceremony, he has in hand, to wit, marriage. And so the uva changed that should fe changed her out are her chiefest guard to keepeher in. Why well then. We were all three in a mind then. I wonder he keeps so long from us i'faith. I woe ̄ der you should miss on't lately, you're his bedfellow Content i'faith, let's trace him. I entertain both thee and thy Device, 'Twill put e'm both to shame. Save you sweet widow, I suffer for your heaviness. Yet if all tongues go right, he did not use you so well as a man might. Why I count you the wiser Widow, it shows you have wisdom, when you can check your passion, for mine own partly, I have no sense to sorrow for his death, whose life was the only Rub to my affection. But Lethe lyes'ith way. Sweet widow. Here they come. There goes the strumpet. I do embrace thee in the best of love, How soon affections fail, how soon they prove. His own Mother my Lord, Which he confessed through ignorance, and disdain, His name so changed to abuse the world and her. Would? seek you for news, there's for you! Now the letters made up and all, it wants but the print of a S ale, and away it goes to Master Quomodo: And drew Le he is well whipped in't, his name stands in a white sheet here, and do S penance for him. 'Tis no thanks now,—but as I was saying: as a soul contempt to that sacred ceremony, he most audaci ouslye keeps a Drab in town, and to be free from the inter ruption of blue Beadles, and other bawdy Officers, he most politicly lodges her in a Constables house. Come set me gentlemen! Had it not more need then, to have wit to put too't if it be grown to a olly? A Coxcomb, he a Courtier. You must have patience yet.
Plot summary
Plot — Michaelmas Term
Rearage and Andrew Lethe are rivals for the hand of Quomodo’s daughter: her mother favours Rearage and her father Lethe. Lethe has assumed gentry status, and is concerned when his plebeian mother arrives from the country; but she does not recognize him, and he employs her as a go-between. Hellgill brings a country wench to London, promising to pass her off as a gentlewoman. He dresses her up and she begins to attract gallants, including Lethe. Her father comes looking for her, and, not recognizing him, she takes him on as a servant. A third visitor from the country is Richard Easy, who is entrapped by Shortyard and Falselight, the agents of Ephestian Quomodo. Shortyard gambles with Easy, persuading him to keep on betting in the hope of breaking his losing streak. In consequence, he needs money to fund his social life, and seeks to borrow it from Quomodo. He is induced to take the loan in cloth, which he can sell on to realize the money; ===== PAGE 155 ===== 1604 posing as the fictitious ‘Blastfield’, Shortyard also signs the bond. Quomodo and his accomplices engineer a downturn in the market: the cloth has to be sold for less than half its true value. When the bond falls due for repayment a month later, Blastfield cannot be found, and Easy is arrested. Quomodo’s accomplices pose as wealthy citizens and stand bail for Easy, so long as he signs over all his possessions to them. When Blastfield still cannot be found, the bailsmen give Quomodo Easy’s lands in lieu of the bail they owe him. Easy is ruined, but Quomodo’s wife Thomasine, who has witnessed the cozenage, takes pity on him and lends him money. Concerned about his son Sim’s possible prodigality, Quomodo feigns his own death to see how people will take it. He attends his own funeral disguised as a beadle, but nobody has a good word to say about him. Thomasine quickly marries Easy, who learns how he was duped. Shortyard cozens Sim of Easy’s lands, but is forced to restore them to Easy to cover himself; but Easy still has him arrested. Still in disguise, Quomodo collects his fee for attending the funeral; Thomasine has him sign a document renouncing any further claim on the household, and for a joke he signs his own name. When this is noticed, he reveals his identity and institutes legal proceedings against Thomasine and Easy. On the day of his marriage to Susan, Lethe is arrested for lewd behaviour with the country wench. All the cases come before a judge, who will only accept Quomodo’s identity when…
