Plot — The Family of Love
Glister forbids his ward Maria to see Gerardine, and confines her to his house. He is invited to a supper party at Purge’s, where Gerardine’s will is to be read. On the way, Gerardine and his friends pass beneath Maria’s window, and she warns him how dangerous it would be for him to climb up to see her, thereby dropping a hint. The will is read: Gerardine is going On a voyage overseas, and has made Maria his heir; his property is in a trunk, which is to be given into Glister’s safe-keeping until he returns. Glister takes delivery of the trunk. Once Maria is alone with the trunk, Gerardine emerges from it. Their tryst is interrupted by Lipsalve, who overheard Maria’s indirect instructions and now poses as Gerardine in hope of an assignation; he goes away unsuccessful, and Gerardine has sex with Maria, promising to marry her later. Glister is consulted first by Lipsalve and then by Gudgeon, each of whom wants magical help in cuckolding Purge. Glister agrees to a stratagem: Lipsalve must pretend to be away for a few days, but stay in his lodgings; Glister will conjure a spirit to bring Mistress Purge there. Each would-be lover is told that the spirit will take the form of the other, and that he must attack it with a whip supplied by Glister. Each keeps the appointment, and whips the other before they realize the trick that has been played on them. Mistress Purge is a member of the Family of Love, a radical Christian sect which is also a women’s sex club. Her husband overhears the password for admission to their meetings, but gets it wrong when he first tries to use it and is turned away. Continuing their pursuit of Mistress Purge, Lipsalve and Gudgeon pretend a religious vocation and are admitted to the Family. Mistress Purge gives them spiritual instruction in the dark, but is taken away for sex by another man, to whom she gives her wedding ring. Unbeknown to her, this is her husband, successfully admitted on his second attempt; since she doesn’t know his identity, he has in effect cuckolded himself. Gerardine conspires with Dryfat and Club to pose as a court of morals which will summon and condemn Glister for sexual incontinence. In disguise, he delivers a forged letter to the Glister household which persuades Mistress Glister that her husband has a bastard in the country and is also the father of the pregnant Maria’s child. Lipsalve and Gudgeon encourage her to cuckold him back, and offer their services; they duly take up lodgings in Glister’s house under…
