Jn her hate revengeable. Tut man every one knows their Worth, when they are at a rack rend; In the term time, they bear as great a prize as wheat when transportations are.— The walls are the more stony arted then, Thee? what to do? under colour of disswation Oh his wife is of the family of Love, I'll thither, per haps I may prove of the Fraternity in time, weel thither thats flat. Silence. Peace Dryfat. And why must we shift our selves into this demure habit, if impossible to be of the Family, and keep our own fashion. What answer madest thou? No more, mistress Purge is at hand. Ready. Purge the pothecary, J prithee lets step aside and hear the issue of this discontent. Of what trade in the name of Pluto? Jst no more but so? And see how happily it succeeds, mistress Purge is new come from the Family, let us step aside while Placket the paratour, gives her a Summons? But Angels make them admirable devils. And we our suppers. Me thinks her phrase flew with somewhat too strong a vapor. I and to all that forswear marriage, and can be content with other men's wives. Master Lipsalue, welcome within ken, we two are so nearly linked, that if thou be'st absent but one two hours, thy acquaintance grows almost mouldy in my memory. And i'faith how yst: me thinks thou hast been a long vagrant. But what news now? how stands the state of things at Brussels. Well fare the City yet: there virtue rides a cockhorsse cherished and kept warm in good sables, and Fox fur, and with the breath of his nostrils, drives pride and covetousness before him, like's own shadow: beggars have whipping cheer, bounty obliges men too't, gives money for Scrips and Scrolls, & liberality sealed with strong Arms and Heraldry, to out live mortality: love there will see the last man born, ne ver give over while ther's and Arrow i'th Quiver. She is not so sweet as a potticaries shop is she? I, if she would let her Ruffs stream out a little wider; but J am sure she is ominous to me, she makes civil wars and insurrections in the state of my stomach: J had thought to have bound my self from love, but his purging comfets makes me lose bodied still. Faith some Lectuary or so. Thou hast sounded her then belike. Oh thats her husband. Faith friend Lipsalue I perceive you would feign play with my love, a pure creature 'tis, for whom I have sought eve ry Angle of my brain: but either she scorns Courtiers (as most of them do, because, they are given to boast of their do ings) or else she's exceeding straight laced: therefore to prevent this smell smock, I'll to my friend Doctor Glister, (a man ex quisite in the Art magic) who hath told me of many rare experiments available in this case: Farewell friend Lyp salve. Master Doctor, this my obscure coming requires and Actium more obscure: and in brief this 'tis; Sir, you are held a man far seen in nature's secrets, I know you can effect many things almost impossible; know then I love mistress Purge, and opportunity favours me not, nor indeed is she so tractable as I expected, if either by medicine, or your Art magikall, you can work her to my will, J have a poor Gallants reward sir. Why by conjuration (I tell you) wherein you are said to be as well practised, as in Physic; here's the best partly of my present store to effect it. Not a man by my Gentry. Of all men living, my conversation is most frequent with Lipsalue the Courtier. I but shall your Spirit come armed with a whip too? Is this infallible, have you seen the proof? Master Doctor I would you had some suit at Court, by the faith of a Courtier, J would beg it for you: Fare you well Sir, I shall report of you, as I find your charm. Oh the naked pastimes of love, the scourge of dulness, the purifier of uncleanness, and the hight house of humanity: I have taken physic of master Purge, any time this twelve months to purge my humour upon's wife, & J have ever found her so fugitive, from exercise to exercise, and from family to Family, that I could never yet open the close stool of my mind to her: so that I may well say with Ovid: Hei mihi quod nullus amor est medicabilis herbis : now am J driven to prove the violent virtue conjuration, if it hit, and that I yearke my familist out of the Spirit, isle hang up my Scourge-stick for a Trophy, and emparadize my thoughts, though the Doctor go to the devil, 'tis no matter: would let me see; Lipsalues door open! and himself out of town? excel ̄ to Doctor, soothsaying Doctor, oraculous Doctor. The apparition: Mistress Purge peers through him, I see her. Has a no cloven feet, what a laxative fever shakes me. My Cue: Clogmathathos. Garragas. Tun tetuphon. What art thou? with the name of Jove I conjure thee? Tell not me, let me prevent thee, the wind shall not take the breath of our gross abuse, we feel the gullery: There before let us swear by our naked truths, & by the hilts of these our blades, our flesh-tamers, to be revenged upon that Parape ropandenticall Doctor, that pocky Doctor. Jf report catch this knavery, we have lost our reputati ons for ever, Wherefore lets be secret; Ill tax we Women of Credulity, When men are gulled with such gross foppery. COme Boys, our clothes boys, and what is the most currant news Periwincle. Must we have no recreation? Why now a speaks Like himself, get me a Parritor for her strait? Off boys, Shrimpe what dost thou think of thy Ma ster, is a not a rare gull? And Tipple the Tapster for deflowering a virgin in his sell ler. Doctor Glister, his wife, Maria : mistress Purge These be the complete number. Indeed me thinks that should be one end of her thought an't be but to cry quittance with her husband, or whose abuse the Town rings. Faith since he has struck with the sword, strike you with the Scabbard: in plain terms Cuckold him: you may as easily do't, as lie down o'your bed. How say you to this, is the colour good? dost Like you? J, but small heart, and less honesty. Thats true, for, for one that holds up his hand at the Ses zions, you shall have ten come into the baudy Court. The wind Collect master Doctor, or some such disease We needs it not, we needs it not: but indeed master Do ctor, for some private infirmities (which our waters shall make known to you) we desire to take some physic of you for a few days, and to that end we would take a lodging in your house during the time? And i'faith we shall requite your pains to the full. A villainous Doctor. And for my partly I have been more mortified by her, then ever I was provoked. Her Name begins with mistress Purge dus it not? More is the pity I say, that fair Women should prove Saints, before Age had made them croo ked: 'Tis my luck to be croft still, but I must not give over the chase. Upon my life we are bewitched, the greasy Ras call, that first seized Mistress Purge (by the last reflection of the light) appeared to my sighed not much unlike her hus band. So is many a men beside yours, and what of that? Ere long he will take up his station at a Statio ners, where we shall see him do penance in a Sheet at least. Speak art not a Spirit, in the likeness of my friend Lipsalue, that should transform thy self to mistress Purge. It and egregious grief, I must confess to see a knave slip betwixt us both, and take occasion by the foretop, but since these projects have had so star cross events, lets lay some plot how to revenge our late disgrace on the Doctor, by making him Cuckold. Nay soft sir: I plied her as soon as you.
Plot summary
Plot — The Family of Love
Glister forbids his ward Maria to see Gerardine, and confines her to his house. He is invited to a supper party at Purge’s, where Gerardine’s will is to be read. On the way, Gerardine and his friends pass beneath Maria’s window, and she warns him how dangerous it would be for him to climb up to see her, thereby dropping a hint. The will is read: Gerardine is going On a voyage overseas, and has made Maria his heir; his property is in a trunk, which is to be given into Glister’s safe-keeping until he returns. Glister takes delivery of the trunk. Once Maria is alone with the trunk, Gerardine emerges from it. Their tryst is interrupted by Lipsalve, who overheard Maria’s indirect instructions and now poses as Gerardine in hope of an assignation; he goes away unsuccessful, and Gerardine has sex with Maria, promising to marry her later. Glister is consulted first by Lipsalve and then by Gudgeon, each of whom wants magical help in cuckolding Purge. Glister agrees to a stratagem: Lipsalve must pretend to be away for a few days, but stay in his lodgings; Glister will conjure a spirit to bring Mistress Purge there. Each would-be lover is told that the spirit will take the form of the other, and that he must attack it with a whip supplied by Glister. Each keeps the appointment, and whips the other before they realize the trick that has been played on them. Mistress Purge is a member of the Family of Love, a radical Christian sect which is also a women’s sex club. Her husband overhears the password for admission to their meetings, but gets it wrong when he first tries to use it and is turned away. Continuing their pursuit of Mistress Purge, Lipsalve and Gudgeon pretend a religious vocation and are admitted to the Family. Mistress Purge gives them spiritual instruction in the dark, but is taken away for sex by another man, to whom she gives her wedding ring. Unbeknown to her, this is her husband, successfully admitted on his second attempt; since she doesn’t know his identity, he has in effect cuckolded himself. Gerardine conspires with Dryfat and Club to pose as a court of morals which will summon and condemn Glister for sexual incontinence. In disguise, he delivers a forged letter to the Glister household which persuades Mistress Glister that her husband has a bastard in the country and is also the father of the pregnant Maria’s child. Lipsalve and Gudgeon encourage her to cuckold him back, and offer their services; they duly take up lodgings in Glister’s house under…
