Stand all aside, and let the Knights determine, And send to keep our Galleys under-sail, For happily we shall not tarry here: Now Governors how are you resolved? What Callapine a little courtesy. Let's know their time, perhaps it is not long; And it's more Kingly to obtain by peace Then to enforce conditions by constraint. What respite ask you Governors? We grant a month, but see you keep your promise. Now launch our Galleys back again to Sea, Wh re wee'll attend the respite you have to ne, And for the money send our messenger. Farewell great Governors, and brave Knights of Malta. Whom have we there, a spy? Art thou that Jew whose goods we herd were sold For Tribute-money? Didst break prison? 'Twas bravely done: but tell me, Barabas, Canst thou, as thou reportest, make Malta ours? If this be true, I'll make thee Governor. Thou'st doomed thy self, assault it presently. Now veil your pride you captive Christians, And kneel for mercy to your conquering foe: Now where's the hope you had of haughty Spain ? Ferneze, speak, had it not been much better To kept thy promise then be thus surprised? I, villains, you must yield, and under Turkish yokes Shall groaning bear the burden of our ire; And Barabas, as erst we promised thee, For thy desert we make the Governor, Use them at thy discretion. It's our command: and Barabas, we give To guard thy person, these our Janizaries: Entreat them well, as we have used thee. And now, brave Pashas, come, wee'll walk about The ruined Town, and see the wrack we made: Farewell brave Jew, farewell great Barabas. Exeunt. Thus have we viewed the City, seen the sack, And caused ed the ruins to be new repaired, Which with our Bombards shot and Basilisk, We rend in sunder at our entry: And now I see the Situation, And how secure this conquered Island stands Environed with the mediterranean Sea, Strong contermined with other petty Isles; And towards Calabria backed by Sicily, Two lofty Turrets that command the Town. When Siracusian Dionisius reigned; I wonder how it could be conquered thus? To banquet with him in his Citadel, I ear me, Messenger, to feast my train Within a Town of war so lately pillaged, Will be too costly and too troublesome: Yet would I gladly visit Barabas. For well has Barabas desern'd of us. I cannot feast my men in Malta walls, Except he place his Tables in the streets. Well, tell the Governor we grant his suit, Wee'll in this Summer Evening feast with him. And now, bold Pashas, let us to our Tents, And meditate how we may grace us best To solemnize our Governors great feast. Exeunt. Come, my Companion-pashas, see I pray How busy Barrabas is there above To entertain us in his Gallery; Let us salute him, Save thee, Barabas. I, Barabas, come Pashas, attend. Treason, treason Pashas, fly. Tell me, you Christians, what does this portend? Was this the banquet he prepared for us? Let's hence, lest further mischief be pretended. Tush, Governor, take thou no care for that, My men are all aboard, And do attend my coming there by this. Yes, what of that? O monstrous treason! Nay rather, Christians, let me go to Turkey In person there to meditate your peace; To keep me here will nought advantage you. The ten years tribute that remains unpaid. I wish, graven Governors 'twere in my power To favour you, but it's my father's cause, Wherein I may not, nay I dare not dally. How now, what means this
Plot summary
Plot — The Jew of Malta
For ten years, Malta has failed to pay tribute to the Turks; now Séliml(@alymath comes to collect the arrears, but grants Bémeze, the Governor, a month to find the money. Ferneze requires the island’s Jews to contribute half their assets towards the sum, on pain of forcible conversion; but Bafabas, a wealthy merchant with trading links all over the east, refuses either to pay or to become a Christian. His entire estate is seized and his house converted to a nunnery. Unbeknown to the authorities, there is a cache of money and jewels hidden in the house; Barabas has his daughter, Abigail, become a nun in order to get access to it. After retrieving the gold, she leaves the convent, and Barabas buys a new house. The Spanish Vice-Admiral, Martin(§@elgposcs} arrives in Malta after routing the Turkish navy. He is granted permission to sell his prisoners as slaves on the island, even though this will be provocative to the Turks; Ferneze decides to keep the gold he levied to pay the tribute, and count on Spanish aid in the war that will follow. Barabas visits the slave market and buys [fiamiore; they swap stories about their exploits in villainy. A Turkish pasha comes to collect the tribute money, but Ferneze refuses to pay. War looms. Mathias and WEdGwiek both love Abigail. Barabas asks her to encourage Lodowick, even though she prefers Mathias; he doesn’t want her to marry either, but particularly wants to destroy Lodowick to get revenge on Ferneze, his father. He tells Mathias of Lodowick’s interest, and forges a challenge from Lodowick. The two young men fight and kill one another. When Abigail finds out what has happened, she rejoins the nunnery. Barabas adopts Ithamore as his heir and sends the nuns an anonymous gift of poisoned rice. They all die; Abigail’s last act is to confess to Friar Barnardine her 1589 father’s part.in the deaths of Mathias and Lodowick. Barmardine and Friarjacom try to exploit the power this knowledge gives them over Barabas, without explicitly revealing it (which is forbidden under canon law). Barabas sets enmity between them by pretending he wishes to join a religious order and give that order his money; the two friars vie with one another to offer him an easier life, and he promises himself to both. He and Ithamore strangle Barnardine with his own girdle and stand up the body as if alive; it falls down when Jacomo strikes it, and he is hanged for the murder. With fewer visitors coming to Malta, there has been a slackening in trade…
