Signeor andrea say. 'tis a villainus age this. That a nobleman should be a knave, as Well as and Ostler. Or a seriant. Or a Broker. Yet I speak not this of lorenzo, For he's and honest Lord. take up thy pen, or isle take up thee. Yowl take it up Sir. what went before, thou hast put me out; beshrew thy impudence or insolence. well Sir, and has hired one to murder you. Art thou a scholar Done horatio ? And canst not aim at Figurative speech. Come read then? He means to send you to heaven, when You return from Portugal. Yet he's and honest dukes son. But not the honest son of a Duke. Oh that villainy should be found in the great Chamber. And honesty in the bottom of the a seller. If yowl be murdered you may? If you be not, thank God, and Jeronimo. If you be, thank the devil and lorenzo. Thus hoping you will not be murdered and you Can choose. Especially being warned before hand. So now read it over. Horatio hast thou wr tten leave bending in the Hams: enough Like a Gentleman usher, Sfoot No Horatio, thou hast made him straddle too much, Like a Frenchman, for shame put his legs closer Though it be painful. Do you accuse me so kind Isabella. In sooth my Lord there is no written name Of any Lady, then no spanish dame. I pray you pardon me I must confess my Lord, it treats of love, Love to andrea, I even to his very bosom. Who I, before your grace it must not be, The Badger feeds not till the Lyons served, Nor fits it news so soon kiss subjects, As the fair cheek of high authrority: Jeronimo lives much absent from the Court, And being absent, there lives from report. Boy thy mother's jealous of my love to her, Though it had happened evil, He should have hard his name yoked with the devil, Here seal the letter with a loving knot, Send it with speed, Horatio linger not: That Done andrea, may prevent his death, And know his enemy by his envious breath. Son Horatio see Andrea slain. Horatio it well as fortune stands, This letter came not to Andreas hands. Oh valiant boy, struck with a Giants arm, His sword so falls upon the Portugals, As if he would slise them out Like Oranges, And squeeze their bloods out: Oh abundant joy, Never had father a more happier boy. Thy Lance lorenzo ? now by my beard you lie? lorenzo, thou dost boast of base renown, Why I could whip all these, were there hose down. Foregod I have joust missed them: would? Soft Jeronimo : thou hast more friends To take thy leave of: Look well about thee, Embrace them, and take friendly leave, My arms are of the shortest, Let your loves piece them out, Your welcome all, as I am a Gentleman, For my sons sa e, grant me a man at least, At least I am: good night kind gentles, For I hope the never a Jew among you all, And so I leave ou. My knee sings thanks unto your highness boun tie, Come hither boy Horatio; fouled thy joints; Kneel by thy father's loins, and thank my leedge, by honering me, thy Mother, and thy self, with this high staff of office. Uvell spoke my boy, and on thy father's side. My leedge how Like you Done Horatios spirit, what, does it not promise fair, Oh fortunate hour, blessed mynuit, happy day, Able to ravish even my sense away; Now I remember too: Oh sweet remembrance, This day my years strike fifty, and in Room, They call the fifty year the year of Jubilee, The merry year, the peaceful year, Jocund year, A year of joy, of pleasure and delight, This shall be my year of Jubilee, for 'tis my fifty. Age ushers honour, 'tis no shame, confess; Beard, thou art fifty full, not a hair less. My léedge, if my opinion might stand firm Within your highness thoughts: I thank your highness: then my Gracious léedge, I hold it meet by way of Embassage, To demand his mind, and the nectlect of tribute: But my léedge here must be kind words, Which does oft besiege the ears of rough Heawn tyrants more then blows. O, a polyticke speech beguiles the ears of foes, Marry my léedge mistake me not I pray, If friendly phrases, honeyed speech, bewitching accent, Well tuned melody, and all sweet gifts of nature, Cannot avail or win him to it, Then let him raise his gall up to his tongue, And be as bitter as physicians drugs, Stretch his mouth wider, with big swollen phrases: O héeres a Lad of mettle, stout Done Andrea, Mettle to the crown Would shake the kings High court three handfuls down. And I love him, and thee valiant Rogero, Noble spirits, gallant bloods, Your no wise insinnating Lords, You would no tricks, you would none of all their slights. Héeres no fine villainy, no damned brother? Farewell true brace of villains, Come hither boy Horatio, didst thou here them. I Like thy true heart boy, thou love thy friend, It is the greatest argument and sign that I begotten Thee, For it shows thou art mine. Peace: Who comes here: news, news Isaballa. Strange news, Lorenzo is become and honest man I I not wondrous to have honesty in hell, go, tell It Abroad now, but see you put no new additions To it: as thus, shall I tell you gossip: Lorenzo, Is become and honnest man: Beware, heware, For honesty spoken in derision points out knavery. Oh then take heed, that Jest would not be trim, He's a great man, therefore we must not knave him. In gentle soul, I'll not been long away, As short my body, Short shall my stay. What harping still upon anadreas death, Have courage boy: I shall prevent their plots, And make them both stand Like too politic sots. But boy fear not, I'll out stretch them all My minds a giant, though my bulk been full. Come pull the table this way, so 'tis well: Come write horatio write, This speedy letter must away to night. What fold paper that way, to a noble man, to Done andrea Spain's ambassador? Fie I am a shamed to see it, Hast thou worn gowns in the University, Lost logic, sucked Philosophy, Eat Cues, drunk Cées, and cannot give A letter the right Courtiers crest: Oh the a kind of state, In every thing save in a Cuckolds pate, Fie, fie, horatio, what is your pen foul. True boy: the a moral in that, as much To say knavery in the Court and honesty in a Cheese house. Wax, wax Horatio : I had need wax two, Our oes will stride else over me and you? Is not this a monstrous courtier. Oh my sweet boy, heaven shield Thee still from care, Oh be as fortunate as Thee art fair. What are you braving us before we come, weel be as shrill as you: strike a alarm drum. And thou long thing of Portugal, why not Thou, that art full as tall As and English gallows: vper beam and all: Devourer of apparel, thou huge swallower, My hose will scarce make Thee a standing collar, What? Have I almost quited you? Nay then if brotherhood by strokes come dew, I hope boy thou wilt gain a brother too. I, I, Done Pedro my boy shall meet Thee, Come valiant spirits of Spain, Valiant Andrea, fortunate lorenzo, worthy Rogero, Sprightly Horatio, Oh let me dwell a little on that name, Be all as fortunate as heavens blessed host; But blame me not, idem have Horatio most, Ride all Conquerors when the fight is done, Especially ride Thee home so my son: So, now kiss and embrace, come, come, I am wars tuter, strike a alarm drum. Correct thy rascals Prince, thou correct him, Lug with him boy, honours in blood best swim. My boy adds Triple comfort to my age, His share is greatest in this victory, The Portugals are slain and put to flight, By Spaniards orce, most by Horatioes might: I'll to the Spanish tents to see my son, Give him my blessing, and then all is done. Content thee boy, thou shalt instaine no wrong, I'll to the king before, and let him know, The sum of victory, and his overthrow. Exit Jeronimo. Whose this, my Lord lorenzo : welcome, welcome, Your the last man I thought on, save the devil. Much does your presence grace our homely roof. Mark, mark, Horatio : a villain guard a villain.
Plot summary
Plot — 1 Jeronimo, with the Wars of Portugal
Hieronimo is created Marshal of Spain. Portugal fails to pay tribute to Spain, and Don Andrea is sent as ambassador to investigate. He learns that the unpaid tribute arises from deliberate policy rather than negligence, and declares war. In Spain, his promotion arouses jealousy in Lorenzo, who plots to frustrate his love for Bel-Imperia: Alcario is to offer her gifts beyond what Andrea could afford, and, if that doesn’t work, Lazarotto is to murder Andrea on his return to Spain. The plot is overheard by Hieronimo and Horatio, who write to warn Andrea. Alcario disguises himself as Andrea to woo Bel-Imperia, and Lorenzo spreads rumours of Andrea’s return to add credence to the pretence: in consequence, Lazarotto mistakenly kills Alcario instead of Andrea, and Lorenzo silences him by hastening his execution. No sooner has Andrea returned than he must leave again: the Portuguese army is on the march. Spanish and Portuguese leaders agree to pair off for single combat in the battle. The two armies’ losses seem evenly balanced: Lorenzo kills Don Pedro, but Alexandro kills Rogero. Andrea is downed by Balthazar but rescued by Horatio; later Balthazar is floored by Andrea, but relieved by soldiers who then kill Andrea. Horatio beats down Balthazar, but Lorenzo seizes the Portuguese prince’s weapons. Andrea’s ghost attends his own funeral, accompanied by Revenge, who will not allow him to speak to Horatio. The war ends with defeat for Portugal; Balthazar is taken to Spain in captivity.
