Tribute, alas that Spain, cannot of peace Forbear, a little coin, the Indies being so near, And yet this is not all: I know you are to hight, to ull of spleen or and imbassador, And will lean much to honour. Nay hear me deer I know you will be rough And violent, and portingale hath a tempestus son, Stamped with the mark of fury, and you too. Weel meet Like thunder, each imperious over Others spleen, you have both proud spirits, and both will strive to aspire, when two vexed Clouds justle they strike Out fire, and you I fear me war, which peace forsend, Oh dear andrea pray, lets have no wars, First let them pay the soldiers, that were mainde In the last battle, ere more wretches fallen, Or walk on stilts to timeless Funeral. But will you indeed andrea. I'll keep your oath for you tell you return. Then isle be sure you shall not be forsworn. Farewell my Lord: Be mindful of my love, and of your word. Yet he is in sighed, & yet but now he's vanished. Oh good Horatio, no: it is for honour prithee let him go. Welcome my life's self form, deer Done Andrea, What news Andrea ? treats it peace or war? But has the king partook your embassy. Nay then you love me not, Let that be first dispatch, till when receive this token. Who names Andrea slain, Oh 'tis andrea, Oh I found I die. Was it not you Andrea questioned me bout love? Angels of heaven foresend it. You came but now, must you partly again. You told me that you spirit Should put on peace but see war follows war. You have over wrought the chiding of my breast, And by that argument, you firmly prove Honour to soar above the pitch of love. Lend me thy loving and thy warlike arm, On which I knit this soft and silken charm, Tied with and amorous knot, Oh may it prove Enchanted armour, being charmed by love, That when it mounts up to thy warlike crest, It may put by the sword, and so be blessed. Oh let me kiss Thee first. Hath that more power then I? Farewell Oh cruel partly, andreas bosom bears away my heart. I have hard of your honour, gentle breast, I do not Like it now so well me thinks. Oh yes: But not a wandering honour deer, I could afford well didst thou stay here, Could honour melt it self into thy veins, And thou the fountain, I could wish it so, If thou wouldst remain here with me: and not go.
Plot summary
Plot — 1 Jeronimo, with the Wars of Portugal
Hieronimo is created Marshal of Spain. Portugal fails to pay tribute to Spain, and Don Andrea is sent as ambassador to investigate. He learns that the unpaid tribute arises from deliberate policy rather than negligence, and declares war. In Spain, his promotion arouses jealousy in Lorenzo, who plots to frustrate his love for Bel-Imperia: Alcario is to offer her gifts beyond what Andrea could afford, and, if that doesn’t work, Lazarotto is to murder Andrea on his return to Spain. The plot is overheard by Hieronimo and Horatio, who write to warn Andrea. Alcario disguises himself as Andrea to woo Bel-Imperia, and Lorenzo spreads rumours of Andrea’s return to add credence to the pretence: in consequence, Lazarotto mistakenly kills Alcario instead of Andrea, and Lorenzo silences him by hastening his execution. No sooner has Andrea returned than he must leave again: the Portuguese army is on the march. Spanish and Portuguese leaders agree to pair off for single combat in the battle. The two armies’ losses seem evenly balanced: Lorenzo kills Don Pedro, but Alexandro kills Rogero. Andrea is downed by Balthazar but rescued by Horatio; later Balthazar is floored by Andrea, but relieved by soldiers who then kill Andrea. Horatio beats down Balthazar, but Lorenzo seizes the Portuguese prince’s weapons. Andrea’s ghost attends his own funeral, accompanied by Revenge, who will not allow him to speak to Horatio. The war ends with defeat for Portugal; Balthazar is taken to Spain in captivity.
