Your highness cirkels me with honours bounds, I still discharge the weight of your command, with best respect, I friendly tempered phrase, Cannot affect the virtue of your charge, I will be hard Like thunder, and as rough, as Northern tempests, or the vexed bowels, Of too insulting waves, who at one blow, Five merchants wealths into the deep does throw, isle threaten crumson wars. Push. Sweet Bellimperia. Respective dear, Oh my lives happiness, the joy of all my being, do not shape Frightful conceit beyond the intent of act, I know thy love is vigilant over my blood, And fears ill fate which heaven hath yet withstood, But be of comfort, sweet Horatio knows, I go to knit friends, not to kindle foes. By this. Portugalles eire I thank thee, Thou seems no less then what thou art, a prince: And and heroic spirit, Portugalese king, I kiss my hand, and tender on thy throne, My Master's love, peace, and affection. Thanks Portugal : My lords I had in charge At my depart from Spain this embassage, To put your breast in mind of tribute endue Unto our Master's kingdom, these three years Detained and kept back: and I sent to know, Whither neglect, or will detains it so. Prince Balthezer, shalles meet? Then thine, and this poss one quality. Woot thou prince: why even for that I love. And thine. to whom. To thee: why should my face, thats placed above my mind, Fallen under it. I when yond get me down, But I stand even yet, jump crown to crown. I dare. No. Agreed, right valiant prince: Then Portugal this is thy resolute answer. Then I unclasp the purple leaves of war, Many a new wound must gasp, through and old scar: So Portugal I leave thee. Up hither sailing in a crimson fleet. Whose groan was that, what frightful villains this, His sword vnshethed, whom hast thou murdered slave? Live truest friend for ever loved and blessed. I but slain in thought, To see so strange a likeness forged and wrought, Lords cannot you yet descry Who is the owner, of this read melting body. Raise up my dear love, Bellimperia, Oh be of comfort sweet, call in thy spirits, Andrea lives Oh let not death beguile Thee. Do not forget, that was alcario My shapes counterset. The king may think my news is a bade guest, When the first object is a bleeding breast. Wars my dread léedge. My léedge, alcario Duke medinas son, And by that slave this purple act was done. Then my léedge, according your gracious dread, Command, I bade defiance with, a vengfull hand. I and returned it with menacing brows, Prince Baltheser his son, Grow Violent and wished the fight begun. Nay sweet love cease, to be denied our honour why it base, to breath and live, and wars in such a case, Is even as necessary as our blood, Swords are in season then, when rights with stood, Deny us tribute, that so many years, We have in peace told out, Why it would raise spleen in the host Of Angels: it enough to make tranquil saints of angry stuff. Have done impatiant Marshal. No prince Balthezer, I have desired him peace, That we might war: What is the tribute, Money tendered yet? Prince balthezer, I know your valiant spirit I know your courage to be trid and good, Yet, Oh prince, be not confirmed in blood; Not that I taste of fear or cowerdyse, But of religion piety, and love, To many bosoms, that yet firmly move, With out disturbed spleens: Oh, in thy heart Weigh the dear dropes of many a purple partly, That must be acted on the fields green stage, Before the evening dews quentch the sons rage, Let tribute be appeased, and so stayed, And let not wonted fealty be denied, To our desert full kingdom: portugals, Keep your forefathers Oaths; that virtue craves; Let them not lie forsworn now in their graves, To make their ashes periorde, and unjust, For heaven can be revenged on their dust, They swore to Spain both for themselves and you, And will posterity prove their sire's untrue, This should not be mong men of virtuous spirit Pay tribute thou, and receive peace and writ. A will. I shall. Can we be foes, and all so well agreed. The prince call me so; To gain that name isle give the deepest blow. Lord General, breath Like your name, A General defiance gainst Portugal. Now cease words, I long to hear the music of clashed swords, Quickly then. Art thou, good: Why then isle quench Thee prince, with thine own blood. Where might I find this valorous balthezer, This fierce, courageous Prince, a noble, worthy, Made of the ribs of mars and fortitude, He promise ed to meet fair, and single me Out a the misty battle: did you search The least wing for him? speak: And could he not be found. Why this would vex the resolution Of a suffering spleen: Prince Balthezer, Portugals valiant heir, The glory of our foe, the heart of courage, The very soul of true nobility: I call thee by thy right name, answer me, Go Captain pass the leaft wing squadron; High, Mingle your self again amid the army; Pray sweat to find him out. This place isle keep, Now wounds are wide, and blood is very deep, 'Tis now about the heavy dread of battle, Soldiers drop down as thick as if death mowed them, As sithmen trim the long haird Ruffian fields, So fast they fallen: so fast to fate life yields. Prince Balthezer: Oh lucky minute? I think I did. Alas, war knows I am to proud a scholar grown, Now to be lashed with steel had I not known My strength, and courage it had been easy then, to have me born upon the backs of men; But now I am sorry Prince you come to late, that wear proud steel i'faith that should do that. Mine for a wager. I hold three wounds to one. Nay isle trust you. For your a prince, I know yowl pay your Due. Prince you might have paid Tribute as well, then battles had been stayed. I'll receive it of you, And give you acquittance with a wound or two Thou art a wondrous friend, a happy spirit, I owe Thee now my life couldst thou inherit, Within my bosom, all I have is thine, For by this act I hold thy arm divine. No my deer self, for I was blessed by Thee, Else his vnpiting sword had cleft my heart, Had not Horatio played some Angels partly. Come happy mortal, let me rank by Thee, Then am I sure no star will threaten me. Oh me, ill stead, valiant rogero slain. Worthy rogero, sure it multitudes That made thee stoop to death, One Portugal could near orewhelmne thee In such crim on streams, And no mean blood shall quit it, balthezer prince balthezer. I in valiant blood, of Done rogeroes shedding And each drop is worth a thousand Portugals. You cannot prince, see a revenge ull sword Waves over my head. Oh I am slain, help me Horatio, My foes are base, and slay me cowardly, Farewell deer, dearest Bellimperia, Yet herein joy is mingled with sad death, I keep her favour longer then my breath. Faith my deer bosom, to take solemn leave, Of a most weeping creature. Thats Bellimperia. What, not to have honour bestoued on me. 'Tis but to Portugal. Ho Pedringano. Are all things aboard. Then Bellimperia. I take leave: Horatio Be in my absence my deer self, chased self, What playing the woman Bellimperia : Nay then you love me not, or at the least, You drown my honores in those flowing watters, Believe it Bellimperia, 'tis as common, To weep at parting, as to be a woman, Love me more valiant, play not this moist prize, Be woman in all parts, save in thy eyes: And so I leave Thee. 'Tis fixed upon my heart, adieu souls friend. Is this thy answer Portingalle : Then thus all Spain which but three minites, ago was thy full friend, is now returned thy foe. Thou shalt pay tribute, Portugalle with blood. I bid you sudden wars. I with strockes you shall Alas that Spain should correct Portugal. I care not. Spare not? No conterfetting villain, He ses my Lord that he hath murdered me. Lay hands one hun, some rear up the bleeding Body to the light. His garments would Like mine, his face made Like: And omynous horror, all my veins does strike, Sure this pretends my death, this misery Aims at some fatal pointed tragedy. No Bellimperia, belike it false Andrea, For the first object mine eyes met, Was that most accursed witch, I much fear me by all signs pretend Most doubtful wars and dangerous pointed ends To light upon my blood. Some take up the body, others take charge Of that accursed villain. It is my léedge, and that with no mean words; He will redeem his honour lost with swords. Word for word my gracious sovereign, And these they were: Thus much return to Spain, Say: That our settled Judgement hath advised us, What tribute is, how poor that Monarch shows, Who for his throne a yearly pension owes, And what our predecesors lost to Spain, We have fresh spirits that can renew it again. Oh what divinity proceeds from love? What happier fortune then my self can move, Hark, the drum beckons me; sweet deer farewell, This scarf shall be my charm, gainst foes and hell. The drum again. Doot quickly then: farewell. Coward, nay then: relentles-rib of steel, What virtue cannot, thou shalt make him feel. Adieu. 'Tis meet we did. Exit Portugals. Revenge give my tongue freedom's, to paint her partly, To thank Horatio, and commend his heart. By Charon's boat I will not. I am a happy Ghost, Revenge, my passage now cannot be crossed, Come Charon: come hels Sculler, waft me over, You able streams which look Like moulted pitch, My Funeral rights are made, my hearse hung rich. By this lip blushing kiss. Do, do. My approved leedge.
Plot summary
Plot — 1 Jeronimo, with the Wars of Portugal
Hieronimo is created Marshal of Spain. Portugal fails to pay tribute to Spain, and Don Andrea is sent as ambassador to investigate. He learns that the unpaid tribute arises from deliberate policy rather than negligence, and declares war. In Spain, his promotion arouses jealousy in Lorenzo, who plots to frustrate his love for Bel-Imperia: Alcario is to offer her gifts beyond what Andrea could afford, and, if that doesn’t work, Lazarotto is to murder Andrea on his return to Spain. The plot is overheard by Hieronimo and Horatio, who write to warn Andrea. Alcario disguises himself as Andrea to woo Bel-Imperia, and Lorenzo spreads rumours of Andrea’s return to add credence to the pretence: in consequence, Lazarotto mistakenly kills Alcario instead of Andrea, and Lorenzo silences him by hastening his execution. No sooner has Andrea returned than he must leave again: the Portuguese army is on the march. Spanish and Portuguese leaders agree to pair off for single combat in the battle. The two armies’ losses seem evenly balanced: Lorenzo kills Don Pedro, but Alexandro kills Rogero. Andrea is downed by Balthazar but rescued by Horatio; later Balthazar is floored by Andrea, but relieved by soldiers who then kill Andrea. Horatio beats down Balthazar, but Lorenzo seizes the Portuguese prince’s weapons. Andrea’s ghost attends his own funeral, accompanied by Revenge, who will not allow him to speak to Horatio. The war ends with defeat for Portugal; Balthazar is taken to Spain in captivity.
