Plot summary
Plot — Wealth and Health
Wealth and Health enjoy a playful dispute about the relative value of material riches and spiritual health; Liberty also asserts his importance in the scheme of things. After sharing the spoils of a theft, Ill-Will and Shrewd Wit enter Wealth’s service, disguising themselves by suppressing the damaging parts of their names. Remedy, whose job is to protect prosperity and freedom in England, warns Health, Wealth, and Liberty against excess and prodigality. He recognizes Wit and Will as miscreants, and expels their confederate Hans as a parasitic foreigner draining England’s national substance. Wit and Will are retained as servants, with the result that Wealth is spent, Health grows sickly, and Liberty is imprisoned. Remedy apprehends the bad servants and sends them to prison. He restores Wealth, Health, and Liberty to their former condition and assures them that justice will ultimately prevail and deceit be exposed.
