What's that? Fie upon it. Have done, have done; what needest thou more procure, When long ere this I stooped to that fair lure: Thy ever loving Harvey I delight it: Marina ever loving shall requite it young. Teach us Philosophy ? I'll be no Nun ; Age scorns Delight, I love it being: There's not a word of this, not a words partly, But shall be stamped, sealed, printed on my heart; On this I'll read, on this my senses ply: All Arts being vain, but this Philosophy. Gentlemen, how welcome you are here, Guess by our looks, for other means by fear Prevented is: our father's quick return Forbids the welcome, else we would have done. I cannot tell what Language I should speak: If I speak English (as I can none other) They cannot understand me, nor my welcome. Pray sir, What is all this in English ? Nay, but your Monsieur's but a Mouse in cheese, Compared with my Signor ; he can tell Of Lady Ʋ enus, and her Son blind Cupid: Of the fair Scylla that was loved of Glaucus, And yet scorned Glaucus, and yet loved King Minos ; Yet Minos hated her, and yet she helped him; And yet he scorned her, yet she killed her Father To do her good; yet he could not abide her: Nay, he'll be bawdy too in his discourse; And when he is so, he will take my Hand, And tickle the Palm, wink with his one Eye, Gape with his Mouth, and Sister, help sister; that's honest Anthony, And he answers, your woer cuius contrarium. Hark sister signor Alvaro say, that I am the fairest of all us three, What be they Master, how I long to hear it? Do so good Master. Who's there, Master Harvey ? How, Master Heigham my grot vrinde? Out alas, here's one of the Strangers. In sadness, well advised: Sister, do you hold him in talk, and weel provide it while. Merrily then my Wenches. Who speak you to? Mathea who's below? Young master Harvey ? for that voice says so. As much to mine. Say master Harvey, saw you, as you came, That Leacher, which my Sire appoints my man; I mean that wanton base Italian, That Spannish -leather spruce companion: That antic Ape tricked up in fashion? Had the Ass come, I'de learn him, difference been Betwixt and English Gentleman and him. Nay nothing (sweet) but only wash his crown: Why the Ass wooes in such and amorous key, That he presumest no Wench should say him nay: He slavers not his Fingers, wipes his Bill, And swears in faith you shall, in faith I will; That I am almost mad to bide his wocing. Would it not mad one to be crossed as I, Being in the very hight of my desire? The strangers frustrate all: our true love's come, Nay more, even at the door, and Haruies arms Spread as a Rainbow ready to receive me, And then my Father meet us: O God, o God. Weel to our father and so know his mind, I and his reason too, we are no fools, Or Babes neither, to be fed with words. No I. Yes yes I warrant you, that humours left, Be I but mou'de a little, I shall speak, And anger him I fear, ere I have done. The Strangers. Come to our Father speech this comfort finds, That we may scold out grief, and ease our minds. Anthony, what of us? What shall we wear? Is my Love come, & sick? I, now thou love me, How my heart joys: O God, get I my will, I'll driven away that Sickness with a kiss: I needs not feign, for I could weep for joy. Master Vandalle, how do you feel your self? What, hang the head? fie man for shame I say, Look not so heavy on your marriage day. Y faith sir no I'll first leap out at window, Before Marina marry with a stranger, And reason too, that Cushion fell out right, Else hard had been his lodging all last night. Then if I were as that belle Gentlewoman's lover, I would trouble her no further, nor be amorous any longer. To boar you through the nose. Nor never are you Like to climb more higher: Sisters, the Woodcock's caught, the Fool is caged.
Plot summary
Plot — Englishmen for My Money, or A Woman Will Have Her Will
The usurer Pisaro intends to marry his daughters to three foreigners, while also using them to acquire wealth from their English suitors. Anthony, their tutor, is sacked for acting as a go-between for the Englishmen, but he disguises himself and is hired in as his own replacement. The daughters encourage their suitors to borrow more money from Pisaro, in the expectation that the debt will be cancelled when they marry. Pisaro, distracted by rumours that his ships have been ambushed in the Mediterranean by Spanish pirates, mistakenly invites the English suitors to dinner. They take up the invitation, meet their foreign rivals, and arrange a nocturnal assignation with the sisters. Learning of this, Pisaro plans to substitute the foreigners, but Anthony forewarns the sisters, so that the Englishmen are able to misdirect the foreigners in the darkness. One of them is actually the clown Frisco, who has taken the Dutchman’s place, and who now leads the two foreigners even further astray. The Dutchman himself finds his way to Pisaro’s house, and the sisters trap him in a basket. The lovers arrive, ready to marry and then sleep with the sisters, but Pisaro intervenes. It seems that the daughters are to be married against their will in the morning, but Anthony devises three schemes: Walgrave impersonates a woman and spends the night with Mathea; Laurentia impersonates Anthony and escapes from the house to- marry Heigham; and Harvey pretends to be mortally ill, forcing Pisaro to let him marry Marina rather than lose the mortgage on his lands. ===== PAGE 28 ===== 28 | 1120.A Woman Will Have Her Will
