Plot summary
Plot — Il Pastor Fido, or The Faithful Shepherd
Years ago, AWAVRE, two-timed by DUST prayed to DiSNa for vengeance. She sent death to Arcadia, and the oracle decreed that her wrath could be appeased only when Lucrina is sacrificed at the hands of Amyntas. Lucrina was brought to the altar, but Amyntas took pity on her and killed himself; recognizing the truth of his love, Lucrina then herself committed a remorseful suicide in turn. But the curse was remitted only temporarily, and {i#@@nnualhuman SAGHHEES must continue; Diana will be permanently pacified only by a marriage between a couple, both of GivVi@NGSS2hH) and by the pity of a faithful shepherd. Such a couple has been identified: SHMSl and AMmamillis; but Silvio is uninterested in women, preferring to hunt the boar which has been ravaging the countryside. ; A chain of failed amours proceeds from. this. AMaHGS is loved by MEFGHG) who thinks himself too poor and lowly to be worthy of her. He has tried to get access to her by dressing as a nymph; in this disguise he became unwittingly involved in a Sapphic kissing contest, and was adjudged the winner by Amarillis. Returning home to tend to his sick father, he pined away, and an oracle reported that his only hope was to go t@NAIRGadial — so here he is. He in turn is both loved and hated by G&HiSE4) who has learned the amorous arts in the city: she loves him for his beauty, hates him for his interest in Amarillis. She offers to promote his suit to ABZ) in order to take revenge on them both. Corisca has led on a SatyiiBefore becoming engaged to GOHGGH; so the Satyr too is vengefully inclined. He catches her by her long hair, intending violent reprisals, but she escapes, because the hair is only a wig. She sets up a rendezvous enabling Miiffilllo to have a ‘chance’ encounter with AliiaMilliis: he finds her playing blind- man’s-buff with some other nymphs, and-is caught by her. He declares his love but is rejected. In fact, Amarillis loves Mirtillo, but knows that she will become a human sacrifice if she breaks her betrothal to Silvio. Corisca tells her that Silvio is seeing another woman; if she catches them together, she can legitimately annul the engagement. In reality, Corisca plans to have Amarillis caught meeting Coridon at a lovers’ cave, thus leaving Mirtillo free to marry her; but Mirtillo sees Amarillis going into the cave, and follows her in, intending to kill his rival. The Satyr sees him enter and assumes Corisca to be the woman he is meeting; he seals the cave mouth with a boulder and goes…
