Shall I never return to mine own house again, We are lodged here in the miserablest doghole, A conjurers circle gives content above it, A hawks mew is a princely palace to it, We have a bed no bigger then a basket, And there we lie Like butter clapped together, And sweat our selves to sawee immediately, The fumes are Infinite inhabit here too; And to that so thick, they c to Like marmalette, So various too, they'll pose a gold finder, Never return to mine own paradise? Why wife I say, why Estifa In. And do you hear, let's have a handsome dinner, And see all things be decent as they have been, And let me have a strong both to restore me, I stink Like a stall-fish shambles, or and oil shop. Nay pray you come out, and let me understand you, And tune your pipe a little higher Lady, I'll hold you fast: rub, how came my trunks open, And my goods gone, what picklock spirit. My goods again, how came my trunks all open. Yes and clothes gone, And chains, and Jewels, how she smells Like hung be e, The palsy and picklocks, fie how she belches, The spirit of garlic. What's that to my question, She is my wife: and gone about my business. Yes sir, is that wonder; Is the name of wife unknown here. I think so for I married her, It was no vision sure. Exit. Why how darest thou meet me again thou rebel, And knowest how thou hast used me thrice, thou rascal, Were there not ways enough to fly my vengeance, No holes nor vaults to hide thee from my fury, But thou must meet me face to face to kill thee? I would not seek thee to destroy thee willingly, But now thou comest to invite me, And comest upon me, How Like a sheep biting Rogue taken i'th manner, And ready for the halter dost thou look now, Thou hast a hanging look thou scurvy thing, hast never a knife Nor never a string to led thee to Elisium? I am mad now, I think I am as poor as she, I am wide else, One civil suit I have left too, and that's all, And if she steal that she must flay me for it, Where does she use? Is she a whore too? She has served me faithfully, A whore, and a thief, two excellent moral learning's In one she Saint, I hope to see her legend. Have I been feared for my discoveries, And courted by all women to conceal um, Have I so long studied the art of this sex, And read the warnings to young Gentlemen: Have I professed to tame the pride of Ladies, And make um bear all tests, and am I tricked now, Caught in mine own nooze, here's a royal left yet, Theres for your lodging and your meat for this week. All mine, And all within it, I will not bore you and ace ont, Can you not receive a noble courtesy, And quietly and handsomely as you ought Couze, But you must ride oath top ont. Had I but lungs enough to bawl sufficiently, That all the queans in Christendom might hear me, That men might run away from contagion, I had my wish; would it were most high treason, Most infinite high, for any man to marry, I mean for any man that would live handsomely, And Like a Gentleman, in his wits and credit, What torments shall I put her to, Phalaris bull now, Pox they love bulling too well, though they smoke for't, Cut her apeeces, every piece will live still, And every morsel of her will do mischief; They have so many lives, there's no hanging of um They are too light to drown, they are cork and feathers, To burn too cold, they live Like Salamanders; Under huge heaps of stones to bury her, And so depress her as they did the Giants; She will move under more then built old Babel, must destroy her. Mine was i'th 'clipse, and had a cloud drawn over it But I believe well, and I hope 'tis handsome, She had a hand would stir a holy Hermit.
Plot summary
Plot — Rule a Wife and Have a Wife
Perez, gathering his troops in preparation for an expedition to Flanders, is visited by the veiled Estefania. She piques his interest by refusing to show her face; on their second meeting, he woos her, hastily marries her, abandons his military career, and moves into what she claims to be her house, bringing with him what he claims to be a trunk of jewels. In fact the house belongs to Margarita; Estefania is no lady but a former servant. Margarita intends to marry, but when her older confidantes remind her of the joys of promiscuity, she decides on a husband who will be content to be cuckolded. Her waiting-woman Altea recommends Leon, who has just evaded military recruitment by feigning folly, and who agrees to be his wife’s subordinate in the marriage, no better than her household servants. The newlyweds arrive unexpectedly at Margarita’s city house, surprising Estefania and her husband. Estefania claims that she has lent the house to Margarita (whom she claims as a kinswoman), to facilitate the cozening of a lover. Perez moves temporarily into lodgings, whereupon Estefania steals the contents of his trunk. She later discovers the jewels to be counterfeit, and gets her own back by encouraging Perez to take possession of ‘his’ house; when he attempts to do so, he is rebuffed by Leon. She presents the jewels to the rich tradesman Cacafuego, persuading him that they are a love-gift from Margarita. In return, he gives her money which she hands over to Perez: evidently she has something to bring to the marriage after all. Now married to Margarita, Leon proves less subservient than she bargained for. She entertains the Duke of Medina to dinner, but Leon refuses to serve any food until he is introduced to the guests and treated as her husband, the host. The Duke tries to get rid of him by sending him a commission to lead a troop of cavalry in Flanders; but he intends to take Margarita along with him, and has all her property packed up. When Margarita cannot dissuade him by entreaty, sickness, or feigned pregnancy, the Duke admits that the commission was a fake. Leon's response is to plan a trip to visit Margarita’s commercial interests in the Indies. To delay her departure and extend her opportunities for adultery, the Duke arranges to be ‘injured’ in a fight outside the house so that he can be lodged there during his convalescence. Threatened with humiliation, Margarita submits herself to her husband. Cacafuego visits the house to show Margarita some jewels,…
